Comparative StudyThe association between parent worry and young children's social-emotional functioning.
: Behavioral health problems are reported to affect as many as 24% of children younger than 4 years. Screening within primary care settings remains low. Brief, inexpensive methods to identify children are needed. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which parent worry about their children's behavior and development is associated with social-emotional problems. ⋯ : Parent worry regarding social-emotional/behavioral issues may be a useful adjunct to developmental surveillance, as it identifies children with the most significant behavioral and social-emotional problems. However, as a screening method to identify all young children with social-emotional problems, parent worry does not currently achieve acceptable classification.

Attachment and infant night waking: a longitudinal study from birth through the first year of life.
: Night wakings are common in infancy. Although a link between infant night wakings and attachment to the primary caregiver has been previously proposed, empirical support is limited so far. The aim of this longitudinal study was to examine the early history of night waking in infants who were later classified as securely or insecurely (avoidantly, resistantly, or disorganized) attached. ⋯ : This study is the first in showing that attachment at 12 months of age is related to infant night waking patterns in the first 6 months of life. Patterns of infant night wakings early in life apparently reflect the emerging attachment relationship.

A pilot study comparing traumatic stress symptoms by child and parent report across pediatric chronic illness groups.
Researchers have recently used a framework of traumatic stress to describe the psychological functioning of children experiencing a chronic illness and their families; however, few studies are available directly comparing symptoms across disease groups. This study compared traumatic stress symptoms of youth being considered for solid organ and bone marrow transplantation, youth diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus, youth diagnosed with sickle cell disease and their parents. Correlates of traumatic stress across these populations were also examined. ⋯ Findings suggest that although most children and parents across disease groups report subclinical levels of traumatic stress symptoms, traumatic stress symptoms may be especially salient for families of pediatric transplant candidates. Although interventions are currently available to treat posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, they will likely need to be individualized to meet the needs of specific disease groups.

Case Reports"Different is nice, but it sure isn't easy": differentiating the spectrum of autism from the spectrum of normalcy.
Brian is a 15-year-old boy who has been just changed to your practice because of a change in insurance plans. When taking the social history, his parents note that he has "the hardest time relating to other kids." Sometimes he will be in the middle of a conversation with a friend and then discuss tangential topics. His father reports that Brian "...has always been an easy target. ⋯ There were no complications. He was treated with stimulants for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in the past, and he is currently on a long-acting amphetamine with equivocal efficacy. The parents are primarily here to refill his medication, but you wonder about their understanding about Brian's condition and where to head next during this visit.

Use of antidepressants during pregnancy and risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in the offspring.
Little is known about the impact of in utero exposure to antidepressants on children's long-term mental health. This study analyzed the impact of exposure to antidepressants during pregnancy on the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the offspring. ⋯ Children of mothers treated with bupropion during pregnancy have an increased risk of being diagnosed with ADHD; a possible causal effect needs to be further studied. Assessing the mental health of caregivers should be considered as part of the evaluation and treatment of children with ADHD.
