Arterial spin-labeling MR imaging in moyamoya disease compared with SPECT imaging.
Arterial spin-labeling (ASL) is a noninvasive magnetic resonance (MR) imaging method used to obtain brain perfusion information on various cerebrovascular diseases. We retrospectively compared the use of ASL-MRI and single-photon emission CT (SPECT) imaging to determine absolute cerebral blood flow (CBF) in moyamoya disease. ⋯ Although the ASL-value was lower than the rest-IMP-value, the significant relationship between the ASL-value and the rest-IMP-value may suggest that perfusion imaging by ASL-MRI could be used to recognize the condition of brain perfusion. In particular, the stronger correlation coefficient between the ASL-value and ACZ-IMP-value might suggest that perfusion imaging by ASL-MRI could show the potentially dangerous zone for ischemia.

The aim of this study was to reveal the relationship between intratumoral uptake of gadoliniumethoxylbenzyldiethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the hepatobiliary phase and pathological features. ⋯ The area of Gd-EOB-DTPA uptake does not always match the greenish part, but HCC with uptake of Gd-EOB-DTPA significantly correlated with green HCC.

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the feasibility of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to differentiate between ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and mastopathy by analyzing their time-intensity curves (TICs) using the two-compartment pharmacokinetic model with an assumption of instantaneous injection of contrast medium (TCPM). After the pre-contrast MRI was performed using a 1.5 T MRI system, DCE-MRI was performed four times after the intravenous administration of contrast medium. We set the volumes of interest (VOIs) on the tumor and normal mammary gland, and obtained the TICs in these VOIs. ⋯ There were significant differences in Slopeini (P=0.009), PeakE (P=0.019), rSlopeini (P=0.010), and rTTP (P=0.005) between DCIS and mastopathy. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for Slopeini, PeakE, rSlopeini, and rTTP were 0.67±0.06 (P=0.009), 0.65±0.06 (P=0.019), 0.67±0.06 (P=0.01), and 0.68±0.06 (P=0.005), respectively. In conclusion, our results suggest that analysis of TICs obtained by DCE-MRI using TCPM appears to be useful for differentiating between DCIS and mastopathy.

Comparison of MRI sequences for evaluation of multiple sclerosis of the cervical spinal cord at 3 T.
Debate remains regarding the utility of the traditional STIR (short inversion time recovery) sequence in aiding MRI diagnosis of spinal cord lesions in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and this sequence is not included in the current imaging guidelines. A recent study proposed a T1 weighted STIR as a superior alternative to the traditional STIR and T2 fast spin echo (FSE). Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity of T2, standard STIR and T1 weighted STIR sequences in the evaluation of MS plaques on our 3 T system. ⋯ This study confirms earlier findings of the traditional STIRs increased sensitivity versus the T2 sequence. However, the new "T1 weighted STIR" appears to be even more sensitive than both these sequences showing potential promise as an alternative method to monitor demyelinating plaques of MS.

Tumor grading is very important both in treatment decision and evaluation of prognosis. While tissue samples are obtained as part of most therapeutic approaches, factors that may result in inaccurate grading due to sampling error (namely, heterogeneity in tissue sampling, as well as tumor-grade heterogeneity within the same tumor specimen), have led to a desire to use imaging better to ascertain tumor grade. The purpose in our study was to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), area under the curve (AUC), and accuracy of diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI), proton MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) or both in grading primary cerebral gliomas. ⋯ Combining DWI and MRSI increases the accuracy of preoperative imaging in the determination of glioma grade. MRSI had superior diagnostic performance in predicting glioma grade compared with DWI alone. The predictive values are helpful in the clinical decision-making process to evaluate the histologic grade of tumors, and provide a means of guiding treatment.
