Repair of articular cartilage represents a significant clinical problem and although various new techniques - including the use of autologous chondrocytes - have been developed within the last century the clinical efficacy of these procedures is still discussed controversially. Although autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACT) has been widely used with success, it has several inherent limitations, including its invasive nature and problems related to the use of the periosteal flap. To overcome these problems autologous chondrocytes transplantation combined with the use of biodegradable scaffolds has received wide attention. ⋯ Hyalograft C compares favorably with classic ACT and is particularly indicated in younger patients with single lesions. The graft can be implanted through a miniarthrotomy and needs no additional fixation with sutures except optional fibrin gluing at the defect borders. These results suggest that Hyalograft C is a valid alternative to ACT.

To re-assess the value of CT and clinical criteria as prognostic and severity indicators in acute pancreatitis and the correlation between them. ⋯ The predictive values of Ranson and PSI score in AP patients are superior to that of other criteria. CT criteria are superior to clinical criterion in predicting local complications, and short-term CT follow-up examination is important in the evaluation of AP.

Role of ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy of axillary lymph nodes in the initial staging of breast carcinoma.
To evaluate the role of US-guided core biopsy in detection of metastatic axillary lymph nodes in preoperative staging of breast cancer. ⋯ Ultrasonographically detected lymph nodes can be easily assessed by US-guided biopsy. Core biopsy is a reliable and easily performed method without significant complications.

(a) To measure the absorbed dose at certain anatomical sites of a RANDO phantom and to estimate the effective dose in radiographic imaging of the jaws using low dose Cone Beam computed tomography (CBCT) and (b) to compare the absorbed and the effective doses between thyroid and cervical spine shielding and non-shielding techniques. ⋯ The use of CBCT for maxillofacial imaging results in a reduced absorbed and effective dose. The use of lead shielding leads to a further reduction of the absorbed doses of thyroid and cervical spine, as well as the effective dose.

The galenic venous system: surgical anatomy and its angiographic and magnetic resonance venographic correlations.
This study aims at evaluating the adequacy of digital subtraction angiography and magnetic resonance venography in imaging of the galenic venous system for surgical planning of approaches to the pineal region. Anatomical dissections were carried out in 10 cadavers of several age groups and these were compared to imaging findings in 10 living subjects. ⋯ Anatomically, the galenic venous system is highly variable. This variability is caused by interpersonal, intrapersonal and age related differences and causes each individual galenic venous system to be unique. Therefore, modern neurosurgical procedures require anatomical information on individual differences. Current radiological methods of digital subtraction angiography and magnetic resonance venography fail short of providing the necessary information. New and more sophisticated MRI technology may fulfill this need.
