Current national estimates of and outcomes of Invasive Mechanical Ventilation (MV) in status asthmaticus (SA) are unclear. The objective of this study is to estimate the incidence and outcomes of MV in hospitalized SA children and adolescents. ⋯ Although MV is infrequently needed in children and adolescents hospitalized for SA (0.55% incidence rate), it is associated with higher IHM rate and significant hospital resource utilization.

Environmental exposures during military deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan may lead to higher rates of respiratory complaints and diagnoses. This study investigates whether there is a relationship between rates of asthma diagnosis and severity associated with military deployment. ⋯ Among active duty military personnel with career limiting asthma, there is no significant relationship between rates of diagnosis or severity based on history of deployment to Southwest Asia.

No consensus guidelines exist for the respiratory treatment of asthmatic children referred for elective surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the attitude of pediatric pulmonologists regarding the pre-operative management of these children. ⋯ This data demonstrate an important variability among pediatric pulmonologists in Israel regarding the practice of pre-operative treatment of infants and children with asthma especially for the less controlled and high risk children. This is most probably explained by the paucity of evidence-based data and the lack of established guidelines. Consensus guidelines for the pre-operative management of asthmatic children are needed.

Childhood asthma and premature birth are both common; however, no studies have reported urbanization association between asthma and prematurity and the duration of prematurity affect asthma development. We use Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID) to explore association between asthma and prematurity among children by using a population-based analysis. ⋯ Our analyses indicated that sex, age, urbanization level, and geographic region are significantly associated with prematurity and asthma. Based on cumulative asthma-free survival curve generated using the Kaplan-Meier method, infants born prematurely should be closely monitored to see if they would develop asthma until the age of 6 years.

Increased sympathetic modulation and decreased response of the heart rate variability in controlled asthma.
To compare the autonomic modulation of heart rate (HR) in asthmatic and healthy volunteers to correlate it with the forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1). ⋯ Controlled asthma in adults appears to induce an increased sympathetic modulation and attenuated response to the postural changes and the M-RSA. Furthermore, there is a correlation between the airways' obstruction and HRV, especially during postural changes.
