Review Meta Analysis
Association between the TLR4 +896A>G (Asp299Gly) polymorphism and asthma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
To determine whether there is an association between the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) +896A>G single nucleotide polymorphism and asthma by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ The meta-analysis findings suggest a lack of direct association between the TLR4 +896A>G polymorphism and asthma, but gene-environment and gene-gene interaction effects and other considerations involving this polymorphism may exist. Therefore, further study is necessary to fully elucidate the role of TLR4 +896A>G in asthma.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Fluticasone/formoterol combination therapy versus budesonide/formoterol for the treatment of asthma: a randomized, controlled, non-inferiority trial of efficacy and safety.
The inhaled corticosteroid fluticasone propionate (fluticasone) and the long-acting β₂ agonist formoterol fumarate (formoterol) have been combined in a single aerosol inhaler fluticasone/formoterol (flutiform(®)). This study compared the efficacy and safety of fluticasone/formoterol with the combination product budesonide/formoterol (Symbicort(®) Turbohaler(®)). ⋯ This study demonstrated comparable efficacy of fluticasone/formoterol to budesonide/formoterol in terms of the primary endpoint, change in pre-dose FEV₁ from baseline to Week 12. This was supported by comparable results for both treatments for all secondary endpoints.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Evaluation of bedoradrine sulfate (MN-221), a novel, highly selective beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist for the treatment of asthma via intravenous infusion.
The number of hospitalizations or deaths due to asthma, most of which result from acute exacerbations of asthma, has remained the same for the past 20 years. MN-221 (bedoradrine sulfate) is a novel, highly selective beta2- (β2-) adrenergic agonist administered via intravenous (IV) infusion in development for the treatment for acute exacerbation of asthma. ⋯ The safety profile of MN-221 and evidence of dose- and plasma-concentration-related bronchodilation supports further clinical development and suggests the potential for clinical benefit without increased clinical risk, particularly for patients where inhaled or nebulized therapy is not adequate or possible. Trial registry name and registration number:Name: MN-221-CL-005Number: NCT00679263.

Atopy is part of the immunopathology of allergic diseases; however, the effect of atopy on the prognosis of asthma in adult patients is not established yet. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is an association between lack of control of asthma and sensitization to aeroallergens. The relation between rhinitis severity and atopy was also investigated. ⋯ In conclusion, positive skin prick test to common aeroallergens was not found to be predictor of asthma control among adults.

This article reviews panel studies of air pollution on children's respiratory health and proposes future research directions. ⋯ There are significant adverse effects of air pollution on children's pulmonary health, especially for asthmatics. Future studies need to examine the lag effects of air pollution on children's lung function and respiratory symptoms. Ambient temperature is predicted to change worldwide due to climate change, which will threaten population health. Further research is needed to examine the effects of ambient temperature and the interactive effects between air pollution and ambient temperature on children's lung function and respiratory symptoms.
