Laparoscopic placement and urodynamic effects of an artificial urethral sphincter in cadaveric dogs.
To describe a laparoscopic approach for placement of a percutaneously controlled artificial urethral sphincter (AUS) in female cadaver dogs and compare the change in urethral pressure and lumen diameter after filling the device. ⋯ Laparoscopic placement of an AUS can be performed successfully in cadaver dogs, improved urethral pressure profile parameters, and visibly occluded the urethral lumen. Further studies of laparoscopic placement in clinical cases affected by urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence are warranted.

Reduction of Surgical Complications in Dogs and Cats by the Use of a Surgical Safety Checklist.
To examine whether the use of a surgical safety checklist (SSC) could reduce the incidence of complications after small animal surgery. ⋯ The frequency and severity of postoperative complications was significantly decreased after introduction of a surgical checklist. All veterinary hospitals should consider using a surgical checklist. Compliance with implementation of the checklist is important for success.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEffect of Metoclopramide on the Incidence of Early Postoperative Aspiration Pneumonia in Dogs with Acquired Idiopathic Laryngeal Paralysis.
Evaluate the effect of a perioperative intravenous continuous rate infusion (CRI) of metoclopramide on the incidence of aspiration pneumonia in the short term postoperative period in dogs undergoing unilateral arytenoid lateralization. ⋯ Perioperative metoclopramide, at the doses used in this study, did not affect the incidence of aspiration pneumonia in the short term postoperative period in dogs with idiopathic laryngeal paralysis undergoing unilateral arytenoid lateralization.

Inflation Pressures for Ex Vivo Lung Biopsies After Application of Graduated Compression Staples.
To compare 2 graduated compression staples (Tri-Staple™, Covidien, Norwalk, CT) and standard staples (Endo GIA™, Covidien) for lung biopsy in dogs. ⋯ Both TST and TSV leaked at significantly lower airway pressures than EG and may not be suitable for canine lung biopsy as some specimens leaked at pressures of 20 cmH2O or less.

Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of Short-Term Postoperative Analgesia by Epidural, Femoral Nerve Block, or Combination Femoral and Sciatic Nerve Block in Dogs Undergoing Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy.
To compare early postoperative analgesia in dogs undergoing unilateral tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) that received bupivacaine via preoperative femoral nerve block (FNB), combination femoral-sciatic nerve block (F+SNB), or lumbosacral epidural (EPI). ⋯ In dogs undergoing unilateral TPLO, bupivacaine administered via FNB, alone or in combination with sciatic nerve block, can provide short-term postoperative analgesia not different to that with administration via lumbosacral epidural.
