We determined whether pre-operative statin therapy is associated with a decrease in the incidence of infections after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ Pre-operative statin use is associated with a decrease in overall incidence of post-operative infections after CABG. We propose immunomodulatory effects of statins leading to a dampening of inflammatory cascade as the cause of our findings.

Drug-eluting balloons for coronary artery disease: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Drug-eluting balloons (DEB) are attractive new alternatives to drug-eluting stents (DES) for percutaneous coronary interventions. We aimed to systematically review the efficacy and safety of DEB in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). ⋯ Our findings support the current recommendation of using DEB in in-stent restenosis. Large, well-conducted trials are essential in determining the application of DEB in other lesion types as well as exploring device-specific efficacy and safety profiles.

Long-term survival after hospitalization for acute heart failure--differences in prognosis of acutely decompensated chronic and new-onset acute heart failure.
To analyze the five-year mortality after hospitalization for acute heart failure (AHF) and compare predictors of prognosis in patients with and without a previous history of heart failure. ⋯ The long-term prognosis after hospitalization for AHF is poor, with a significantly different survival observed in patients with de-novo AHF compared to ADCHF. A previous history of heart failure is an independent predictor of five-year mortality. Distinction between ADCHF and de-novo AHF may improve our understanding of patients with AHF.
