The aim of this study was to evaluate the patterns of disease progression in patients treated with pleurectomy/decortication (P/D), hyperthermic pleural lavage with povidone-iodine, prophylactic radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy, using F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET/computed tomography (PET/CT). ⋯ After P/D with hyperthermic pleural lavage with povidone-iodine, prophylactic radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy, the most frequent site of recurrence is the pleural cavity. Peritoneal seeding is rare. The tumour SUVmax and tumour lesion glycolysis correlate significantly with overall survival.

Infections of the spine are rare and often discovered late, but they can have a severe outcome with hospital case fatality rates of up to 17%. Efficient and early diagnosis is important, because early diagnosis and therapy improve outcome. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical value of F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake pattern in PET as a diagnostic modality for the detection of spondylodiscitis. ⋯ The application of 18F-FDG uptake patterns in 18F-FDG-PET helps to predict or exclude spondylodiscitis. Differentiation between inflammatory and degenerative changes in the vertebral body endplates is possible. Owing to the high specificity of this method, a negative PET result in the setting of a diagnostically unclear case diminishes the need for surgical intervention. 18F-FDG-PET is therefore an important tool in inflammation imaging and can be used in the diagnostic cascade of difficult cases with suspected spondylodiscitis. In contrast, a positive PET result does not always clearly establish the cause of increased 18F-FDG uptake.

Evaluation and comparison of Ga-68 DOTA-TATE and Ga-68 DOTA-NOC PET/CT imaging in well-differentiated thyroid cancer.
Somatostatin receptor (Sstr) scintigraphy with radiolabelled somatostatin analogues has been used extensively for the diagnosis and therapy of Sstr-expressing tumours. It has been shown that well-differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC) cells have a high expression of Sstr2, Sstr3 and Sstr5. Hence, WDTC cells could be an ideal target for the evaluation of lesion uptake of Ga-68 DOTA-1-NaI3-octreotide (DOTA-NOC), which has a high affinity not only to Sstr2 but also to Sstr3 and Sstr5. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the value of Ga-68 DOTA-NOC as a target for Sstr2-expressing, Sstr3-expressing and Sstr5-expressing tumours in WDTC patients and to compare the results with those of Ga-68 DOTA-TATE in the same patient population. ⋯ Our study suggested that Ga-68 DOTA-TATE has a higher lesion uptake even in WDTC patients and may have potential advantage over Ga-68 DOTA-NOC.

13N-Ammonia PET/CT for detection of recurrent glioma: a prospective comparison with contrast-enhanced MRI.
We assessed the value of N-ammonia PET-computed tomography (PET/CT) in recurrent glioma and compared the results with those of contrast-enhanced MRI (CE MRI). ⋯ N-Ammonia PET/CT shows higher accuracy compared with contrast-enhanced MRI for detecting recurrent gliomas, particularly in low-grade tumours.

The use of technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate single-photon emission tomography/computed tomography (99mTc-MDP SPECT/CT) of the spine and sacrum has increased over the past years; however, there is little information about the optimal clinical role and true clinical impact of this modality. ⋯ 99mTc-MDP SPECT/CT of the spine and sacrum is most frequently used for the diagnosis and management of pain. It helps identify several potential pain generators, is often used in patients who have a near-contemporaneous MRI, and has an impact on the procedural and/or conservative management in most patients. In addition, several areas in need of future research to establish the optimal clinical role of this modality were identified.
