Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Value of 18F-FDG PET versus iliac biopsy in the initial evaluation of bone marrow infiltration in the case of Hodgkin's disease: a meta-analysis.
We carried out a meta-analysis to evaluate the performance of 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) PET and PET/CT against bone marrow biopsy (BMB) in the initial diagnosis of bone marrow infiltration (BMI) in patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD). ⋯ (18)F-FDG PET significantly outperforms iliac BMB in the detection of BMI in the initial staging of HD patients and therefore should be used as a first-line study. Iliac BMB has low sensitivity and a high rate of false-negative findings. Thus, a negative BMB finding cannot rule out marrow involvement in HD patients on initial staging.

The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic and prognostic values of (99m)Tc-MDP-planar bone scintigraphy ((99m)Tc-MDP-BS), (131)I single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography ((131)I-SPECT/CT) and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG)-PET/CT for the detection of bone metastases from differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). ⋯ (131)I-SPECT/CT and (18)F-FDG-PET/CT demonstrated high diagnostic performance in detecting bone metastases from DTC. (99m)Tc-MDP-BS might be completely replaced by (131)I-SPECT/CT in combination with ((131)F-FDG-PET/CT in the management of DTC patients with bone metastases. (18)F-FDG-PET/CT positivity was an independent factor associated with poor prognosis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlative role of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) measurement and contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (ceCT) in the detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) recurrence. ⋯ 18F-FDG PET/CT has an additional role in the detection of CRC recurrence with a higher sensitivity compared with CEA and ceCT alone, and 18F-FDG PET/CT is especially more successful in patients with isolated elevated CEA levels or positive ceCT findings without accompanying CEA elevation.

To evaluate the utility of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET-CT in the diagnosis of recurrent gastric adenocarcinoma in a Non-Oriental Asian population. ⋯ 18F-FDG PET-CT is highly sensitive and specific for detecting recurrence in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. It shows high accuracy both on a per-patient and per-lesion basis.

Diagnosis of pulmonary embolism: planar images generated from V/Q SPECT are not a reliable substitute for traditional planar V/Q scan.
The use of summed planar images generated from single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) scintigraphy has been proposed as a substitute for planar V/Q scans in order to use the revised PIOPED interpretation criteria when only SPECT acquisition is performed in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism. The aim was to evaluate the accuracy of angular summed planar scans in comparison with true planar images. ⋯ Planar images generated from SPECT V/Q scintigraphy are not a reliable substitute for true planar V/Q images.
