Comparative StudyCorrelation between early retinal nerve fiber layer loss and visual field loss determined by three different perimetric strategies: white-on-white, frequency-doubling, or flicker-defined form perimetry.
To compare the significance of white-on-white standard automated perimetry (SAP), matrix frequency doubling technology (FDT), and flicker-defined form perimetry (FDF) for early detection of nerve fiber layer loss in early glaucoma patients. ⋯ The sensitivity for detection of RNFL loss in early glaucoma seems to be higher in FDF and FDT matrix than SAP perimetry, while specifity was highest in SAP. Thus, simultaneous performance of FDF/FDT matrix and SAP perimetry seems beneficial for the correct diagnosis of early glaucoma in patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparisons of cone electroretinograms after indocyanine green-, brilliant blue G-, or triamcinolone acetonide-assisted macular hole surgery.
To compare the function of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) using the photopic negative response (PhNR) in patients who had undergone indocyaine green (ICG)-assisted, brilliant blue G (BBG)-assisted, or triamcinolone acetonide (TA)-assisted internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling during macular hole (MH) surgery. ⋯ The results indicate that the PhNR may detect subclinical impairments of RGCs caused by the possible toxic effect of ICG. This finding adds to the data that BBG and TA may be safer than ICG for use during MH surgery.

Meta AnalysisAssociation between DNA repair genes (XPD and XRCC1) polymorphisms and susceptibility to age-related cataract (ARC): a meta-analysis.
DNA repair gene (XPD and XRCC1) polymorphisms have been considered as risk factors for the development of age-related cataract (ARC). To confirm the association between DNA repair gene (XPD and XRCC1) polymorphisms and the risk of ARC, a meta-analysis was conducted. ⋯ Our meta-analysis suggested that the CC genotype of XPD Lys751Gln (A/C) SNP seemed to portend a decreased risk for ARC in Caucasian populations but not in Asian populations. The A allele and GA genotype of XRCC1 Arg399Gln (G/A) SNP might increase risk for ARC in Asian populations but not in Caucasian populations. More researches with larger and more different ethnic populations on this issue are therefore necessary.
