Amyloid precursor protein processing and retinal pathology in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease.
Retinal ganglion cell loss is considered to be a cause of visual impairment in Alzheimer;s patients. Alterations in amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing and amyloid-beta (Abeta) accumulation, key molecules associated with Alzheimer;s disease pathogenesis, may therefore contribute to retinal damage. We therefore investigated retinal APP processing and eye morphology in Alzheimer;s transgenic mouse models. ⋯ Alzheimer's mouse model retinas present with different APP proteolytic products and have a significantly lower production of amyloidogenic Abeta than found in brain.

Bottle cork and cap injury to the eye: a review of 34 cases.
To describe our series of bottle cork and cap injuries to the eye in order to report the visual impairment and clinical outcomes observed in 34 cases over an 8-year period. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the largest series of bottle cork and cap injuries to the eye published to date. This kind of injury can be potentially sight-threatening, leading to severe visual loss in a small percentage of cases. We highlight the need for preventative measures such as labelling or devices to regulate cork pressure.

Comparative StudyThe microstructure of cornea verticillata in Fabry disease and amiodarone-induced keratopathy: a confocal laser-scanning microscopy study.
The purpose of this study is to describe cornea verticillata in Fabry disease and in amiodarone-induced keratopathy and to compare the corneal microstructure of both types. ⋯ The microstructural corneal changes typically seen in cornea verticillata in both Fabry disease and in amiodarone-induced keratopathy can be successfully visualized by confocal in-vivo microscopy at the level of the basal cell layer. By analogy, with the grading system for cornea verticillata based on slit-lamp microscopy, staging of these deposits in the basal cell layer can also be performed following in-vivo CLSM. The microdots in the anterior stroma as well as the changes observed in the tarsal conjunctiva should be regarded as having less diagnostic value because such changes may also occur in normal subjects. The utility of CLSM as a tool for monitoring ERT in Fabry disease over time needs to be confirmed in studies with larger sample sizes conducted over a longer period.

Paintball-related ocular injuries result in severe damage and loss of vision. Despite efforts to increase public awareness and improve safety features, the incidence of eye injuries has increased over time. We examined the characteristics and ocular effects of paintball injury at our tertiary referral center. ⋯ Paintball trauma results in significant ocular injury and loss of vision. Most injuries occur in unsupervised settings without proper eye protection. Ten patients (71%) were injured in accidental or intentional shootings. Lack of supervision and use of paintball materials as assault weapons make the risk for ocular injury more significant. Improved safety features of paintball equipment, along with continued education of proper eye protection, may reduce the incidence of severe ocular injuries.

Toy gun ocular injuries associated with festive holidays in Kuwait.
Ocular trauma is one of the important causes of preventable blindness and visual impairment among children worldwide. Prevalence of pediatric ocular trauma associated with toy guns appear to be on the rise, although they are fully preventable. The purpose of this study is to report ocular trauma secondary to toy-gun pellets in Kuwait. ⋯ Eye trauma with toy guns resulted in significant injuries that required medical intervention and hospitalization for variable lengths of time, with a potential of causing long-term ocular complications. Our findings should assist public health workers in formulating specific prevention strategies, including a health educational program to make parents and health care professionals aware of the potential harm of these toys.
