In vivo confocal microscopy of pigmented conjunctival tumors.
To analyze the appearance of conjunctival pigmented tumors as seen by in vivo confocal microscopy. ⋯ High correlations were found between in vivo confocal microscopy using near-infrared laser light and histology in the diagnosis of pigmented conjunctival lesions. In vivo confocal microscopy seems to be a valuable new tool in the differential diagnosis and follow-up of pigmented conjunctival tumors. It does not replace histology, but may assist in performing guided biopsy in tumors suspected clinically and/or with in vivo microscopy. In addition, in vivo confocal microscopy may support the clinical diagnosis of extrascleral involvement in uveal melanoma.

Vitreoretinal surgery of the posterior segment for explosive trauma in terrorist warfare.
To describe surgical management and establish anatomic and visual results of patients with explosive ocular trauma in terrorist attacks treated with extreme vitreoretinal surgery. ⋯ We presented a series of patients with severe ocular trauma of the posterior segment from explosive weapons. These patients were treated according to our surgical protocol with extreme vitreoretinal surgery within the first 2 weeks after the blast; with our procedure we obtained stabilization or improvement of the VA for 84% of the cases.

Emergency treatment of eye burns: which rinsing solution should we choose?
In the treatment of eye burns few data on the comparative application of rinsing solutions exist. We present experiments in vitro and ex vivo on the pH changes that can be achieved in alkali eye burns with currently distributed and propagated rinsing fluids like water, saline solution, Cederroth Eye Wash Solution (including borate buffer), Diphoterine, Ringers lactate solution and phosphate buffer. ⋯ In alkali burns we recommend efficient buffering solutions. The tested isotonic phosphate buffer (PBS) was not effective at buffering the intraocular pH. Water was found to be much less efficient than Previn, Diphoterine or Cederroth Eye Wash solution in balancing intraocular pH.

Case ReportsPeriorbital necrotising fasciitis after minor trauma.
Necrotising fasciitis or streptococcal gangrene is a rare and often fatal soft tissue infection usually affecting the limbs and trunk. Facial involvement is exceedingly rare due to the excellent blood supply of this region. ⋯ Physicians and ophthalmologists must be aware of the risk factors, although rare, for periorbital necrotising fasciitis and the cardinal signs that differentiate this condition from common non-necrotising preseptal cellulitis. Prompt recognition and early surgical debridement are crucial in limiting the morbidity and mortality from severe forms of this disease.

Chronic bilateral common carotid artery occlusion: a model for ocular ischemic syndrome in the rat.
Ocular ischemic syndrome is a devastating eye disease caused by severe carotid artery stenosis. The reduction of blood flow produced by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) of rats for 7 days induces events related to gliosis with no evident histological damage. However, retinal degeneration and cellular death occur after 90 days of BCCAO. Our purpose has been to investigate the effects of BCCAO for 30 days in the retina of adult rats. ⋯ This study demonstrates that BCCAO for 30 days induces functional and morphological damage to the retina with loss of the pupillary reflex and a decrease in IPL thickness and RGC number. We suggest that this protocol might be used as a model for ocular ischemic syndrome in the rat.
