Comparative StudyAnalgesic effects of sub-Tenon's versus retrobulbar anesthesia in planned extracapsular cataract extraction.
A prospective study was conducted to compare the analgesic effects of sub-Tenon's and retrobulbar anesthesia by assessing patients' response to the visceral stimulus. ⋯ Sub-Tenon's anesthesia is an effective and reliable anesthetic method in cataract surgery.

Comparative StudyNaso-temporal asymmetry and contraction anisocoria in the pupillomotor system.
Differences between the pupillomotor sensitivity of nasal and temporal retinal hemifields may contribute to the relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) seen in optic tract or pretectal lesions. To understand the architecture of the pupillary pathway, it is necessary to know the size and the prevalence of such naso-temporal differences and also of contraction anisocoria (unequal direct and consensual pupillary responses) in normal individuals. The results of previous studies have been only partially consistent. ⋯ RAPD in optic tract damage or pretectal lesions cannot be explained by the only slightly more sensitive nasal retina. Considerably more input would be needed from the contralateral than from the ipsilateral retina into the optic tract. The nearly equal direct and consensual pupil reactions when stimulating the temporal retina suggest an input of temporal retina to both sides of the pretectum. Such a crossing of temporal fibres may take place in the chiasm.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialPostoperative nausea and vomiting after Faden operation.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antiemetic effect of prophylactic dimenhydrinate application prior to Faden operation and to compare the incidence of PONV between bimedial Faden operation (BMF) and horizontal recess-resect procedure (R&R). ⋯ The high incidence of PONV after BMF can be explained by the greater invasiveness of BMF than R&R surgery. PONV requiring antiemetic rescue medication can be reduced by preoperative administration of dimenhydrinate suppositories.

Case ReportsSerum tryptase: an indicator of anaphylaxis following fluorescein angiography.
Anaphylaxis is a potentially fatal complication of fluorescein angiography. It is diagnosed by clinical signs. Serum beta-tryptase serves as a specific indicator of mast cell activation and of anaphylactic shock that can be detected by radioimmunoassay. ⋯ This case is the first in which elevated levels of beta-tryptase in serum indicated that the systemic adverse reaction to fluorescein was mast cell dependent. Additionally, beta-tryptase levels can be assayed to detect anaphylactic reactions several hours after a precipitating event.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialThe favorable effect of topical betaxolol and timolol on glaucomatous visual fields: a 2-year follow-up study.
It has been suggested that beta-adrenergic antagonists might have mechanisms of action other than ocular hypotensive effects affecting the visual function in glaucoma patients and that betaxolol might protect the visual field better than others. A randomized, double-blind study was conducted to compare the effects of betaxolol and timolol on visual fields of glaucoma patients. ⋯ In the present study both betaxolol and timolol had a favorable effect on the visual fields of glaucoma patients. There was no statistically significant difference between betaxolol- and timolol-treated patients either in the change in mean retinal sensitivity or in the change in localized scotomatous areas.
