Clinical TrialAn open-label evaluation of the efficacy and safety of Stadol NS with ibuprofen in the treatment of pain after removal of impacted wisdom teeth.
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of transnasal butorphanol tartrate (Stadol NS; Bristol-Myers Squibb, New York, NY) in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe pain after oral surgery for the removal of impacted third molars. ⋯ The rapid onset of analgesia and long duration of action shown by Stadol NS in this study, as well as its ease of administration and high level of patient acceptance, suggest that this drug would be an excellent primary choice for the management of pain after third molar extraction and oral surgery in general.

Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialAnalgesic efficacy of intranasal butorphanol (Stadol NS) in the treatment of pain after dental impaction surgery.
This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of increasing doses of intranasal butorphanol (Stadol NS, Bristol-Myers Squibb, New York, NY) compared with placebo in controlling moderate to severe pain after removal of bony impacted third molars. ⋯ Intranasal butorphanol effectively relieved postsurgical dental pain, with a rapid onset within 15 minutes, and seems to be a promising addition to the current armamentarium of opioid analgesics. As with other opioids, it should be used cautiously in an outpatient setting.

Clinical TrialEffectiveness of Stadol NS (butorphanol tartrate) with ibuprofen in the treatment of pain after laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.
Laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (LA-UPPP) is a recently developed technique for treating snoring and mild sleep apnea. This treatment is associated with severe postoperative pain. This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of transnasal administration of butorphanol tartrate (Stadol NS; Bristol-Myers Squibb, New York, NY) as a primary means of controlling pain after this surgical procedure. ⋯ Stadol NS appears to be an effective treatment for moderate-to-severe pain after LA-UPPP. If patients have difficulty swallowing, which is the case with most throat surgeries performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons and otolaryngologists, the transnasal route of administration reduces the number of oral medications taken by the patient.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialSingle-dose vicoprofen compared with acetaminophen with codeine and placebo in patients with acute postoperative pain after third molar extractions.
The purpose of this double-blind, randomized study was to compare the efficacy and safety of a single dose of the following medications: 2 tablets of Vicoprofen (ibuprofen 200 mg/hydrocodone 7.5 mg; Knoll Pharmaceutical Co, Mount Olive, NJ), 2 tablets ofp6 acetaminophen with codeine phosphate (acetaminophen 300 mg/codeine 30 mg), and 2 tablets of placebo in the management of moderate to severe postoperative dental pain after surgical extraction of at least one impacted mandibular third molar. ⋯ Vicoprofen was found to be an effective postoperative analgesic medication in the management of acute postoperative dental pain. Its total analgesic effect, duration of analgesia, and global evaluation were superior to acetaminophen with codeine and placebo in this study model.
