The effect of preoperative recombinant erythropoietin on postoperative hematocrit level after orthognathic surgery.
To compare the postoperative red cell mass as indicated by the hematocrit value of orthognathic surgery patients given iron supplementation and a single preoperative dose of erythropoietin alpha (EPO) and patients who did not receive either EPO or iron supplementation. ⋯ A single preoperative dose of erythropoietin with iron supplementation resulted in a smaller decrease, on average, in postoperative red cell mass as indicated by hematocrit value in patients with complicated orthognathic surgery procedures.

Which risk factors are associated with neurosensory deficits of inferior alveolar nerve after mandibular third molar extraction?
Mandibular third molar extraction is a commonly performed procedure and is recognized as a relatively frequent cause of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury. The aim of the present study was to investigate the specific risk factors for neurosensory deficits, including age, gender, impaction depth, angulation of the third molar, and various radiographic superimposition signs. ⋯ The results of the present study have demonstrated a significant association between several risk factors and neurosensory deficits of the IAN after third molar extraction. With a case group of 104 patients, the number of subjects was significantly greater than that in previous studies, increasing the reliability of these results.

Comparative StudyIntraoperative blood loss during orthognathic surgery is predicted by thromboelastography.
The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the predictive value of the viscoelastic properties of whole blood samples collected preoperatively in relation to intraoperative blood loss in patients subjected to orthognathic surgery. ⋯ We conclude that intraoperative bleeding volume in patients subjected to orthognathic surgery can be predicted by means of preoperative TEG analysis. TEG results provide optimization of patient safety and can be used for the evaluation of bleeding risk.

Comparative StudyEvaluation of the inferior alveolar canal for cysts and tumors of the mandible-comparison of multidetector computed tomography and 3-dimensional volume interpolated breath-hold examination magnetic resonance sequence with curved multiplanar reformatted reconstructions.
To evaluate the mandibular canal using volume interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) sequencing in patients with cysts and tumors of the mandible. ⋯ MR reconstructions with VIBE sequencing as source images provide images comparable to CT reconstructed images for evaluation of the mandibular canal. Three-dimensional (3D) VIBE sequencing can be added to the MR protocol to visualize the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle. 3D VIBE sequencing increases the diagnostic capabilities of MRI when used to image mandibular cysts and tumors.
