Evaluation of the application of computer-aided shape-adapted fabricated titanium mesh for mirroring-reconstructing orbital walls in cases of late post-traumatic enophthalmos.
Computer-aided individually shape-adapted fabricated titanium mesh for the mirroring-reconstruction of the orbit is a promising method for the correction of post-traumatic enophthalmos. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of this technique and assess the treatment outcomes. ⋯ Application of the individual fabricated titanium mesh for orbital reconstruction reduced the trauma-induced orbital volume increment by 65% and corrected 50% of severe late enophthalmos. Additional augmentation of orbital contents was required for further correction. The related treatment parameters were suggested.

Review Meta AnalysisCorticosteroid administration in oral and orthognathic surgery: a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis.
This study evaluated the effect of corticosteroid (CS) administration on edema, analgesia, and neuroregeneration in conjunction with surgical dental extraction, orthognathic surgery, and the risk of developing side effects. ⋯ These findings suggest that the administration of CS in oral surgery decreases edema and pain significantly, with no higher risk of infection and with a minimum risk of other side effects.

Clinical TrialDigital subtraction angiography-guided percutaneous sclerotherapy of venous malformations with pingyangmycin and/or absolute ethanol in the maxillofacial region.
The present study evaluated the safety and efficacy of digital subtraction angiography-guided percutaneous sclerotherapy of venous malformations (VMs) with pingyangmycin and/or absolute ethanol in the maxillofacial region. We present our safe and novel method for treating venous malformations. ⋯ Digital subtraction angiography-guided phlebography of VMs in the maxillofacial region is one of the approaches to classify VMs using anatomic and hemodynamic features. A strong association was seen between the type of VM and the approach of sclerotherapy. Percutaneous sclerotherapy using pingyangmycin and/or absolute ethanol is a safe and effective method of treating symptomatic VMs.

A 9-year retrospective study of dental trauma in Piracicaba and neighboring regions in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of dentoalveolar trauma during a 9-year period in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division at Piracicaba Dental School, State University of Campinas in patients from the Piracicaba municipality and neighborhood regions in São Paulo, Brazil. ⋯ This study shows that dentoalveolar trauma rates and patterns in the Piracicaba municipality and neighborhood regions in São Paulo are similar to other populations. The weekend is the period with the major incidence of dentoalveolar trauma. Alcohol consumption was linked with this type of trauma. Dentoalveolar trauma is involved in and closely related to severe maxillofacial trauma. The use of a helmet is as important as that of a seatbelt. More studies are necessary for a better knowledge and understanding when considering protocols and organization charts in emergency rooms.

The blast biodynamic presents maxillofacial injuries of a different type. The analysis of facial skin lacerations and intense flash burns will add new clinical findings that will assist in the early diagnosis of life-threatening airway compromise due to the inhalation of hot gases and toxic fumes. Improvised explosive devices most likely result in blast injuries and severe incendiary situations. Consequently, we require a better understanding of blast pathophysiologic effects, as well as the diagnosis and emergency management of facial soft tissue injuries, which create and provoke new challenges in lifesaving techniques and procedures. ⋯ Recently, many victims of improvised explosive devices have shown varying degrees of facial injuries in different patterns with or without flash burns. In addition, patients have had intense thermal inhalation that leads to oral-nasal-pharyngeal edema and toxic fume inhalation that may require the management of life-threatening airway compromise. This report will contribute to the lexicon of maxillofacial surgery diagnosis and procedures, including lifesaving airway management, by the appraisal of patients exposed to blast injuries and strong momentary thermal effects on soft tissue wounds.
