The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of progressive hypoventilation on echocardiographic measures of the left ventricular (LV) appearance in a porcine model. ⋯ Progressive hypoventilation led to a marked D-configuration of the LV and a sharp decrease in systemic blood pressure. After respiratory resuscitation, sonographic measures normalized. These findings were explainable by the pressure changes observed within the left and right ventricles.

We have created a low-cost and easy to make phantom for abscess identification using point-of-care ultrasound. The phantom also allows needle tracking and abscess aspiration using ultrasound guidance.

Assessment of a Novel Point-of-Care Ultrasound Curriculum's Effect on Competency Measures in Family Medicine Graduate Medical Education.
Point-of-care ultrasound has been shown to decrease the use of expensive diagnostic studies and improve quality outcome measures. Currently, there is a large desire for training in family medicine residencies, but very few programs have established curricula. We sought to develop a family medicine residency curriculum and evaluate it with tools we developed. We wanted our curriculum to be easy to adopt by other residency programs, even if they did not have many well-trained ultrasound faculty. ⋯ We developed a point-of-care ultrasound curriculum for family medicine residency programs that improves measures of resident attitude, skills, and knowledge. This curriculum can be adopted by residency programs with few faculty members who are experienced in ultrasound.

Despite the increased educational exposure to point-of-care ultrasound (US) at all levels of medical training, there are utilization gaps between academic and nonacademic emergency department (ED) settings. The purpose of this study was to assess the current practices and potential barriers to the use of point-of-care US in nonacademic EDs throughout the state of Arizona. ⋯ Ultrasound equipment is available in nearly all nonacademic EDs in Arizona. However, it appears that most providers lack US training, credentialing, quality assurance, and reimbursement mechanisms.

To determine whether fetuses with an isolated aberrant course of the right subclavian artery (ARSA) have increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities, including trisomy 21 or 22q11 deletion. ⋯ As an apparently isolated finding, ARSA is benign and not associated with trisomy 21 or 22q11.2 deletion. The finding of ARSA, however, warrants a detailed fetal ultrasound. All fetuses with ARSA and genetic anomalies had additional ultrasound findings.
