To evaluate the effect of a short-term training program in emergency ultrasound on physician skills and attitudes in southwestern Tanzania. ⋯ Registrar physicians in Tanzania can effectively learn basic emergency ultrasound skills in a short-term training program. Similar future programs may consider heavier emphasis on practical hands-on training with experts. Ongoing data collection is required to understand the true impact of such training on long-term ultrasound use and patient outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to determine intraobserver, interobserver, and inter-day reliability levels for stiffness measurements of the patellar tendon and rectus femoris muscle using shear wave elastography (SWE). ⋯ Shear wave elastography using the Virtual Touch tissue imaging quantification technique is a reliable and repeatable technique for patellar tendon and rectus femoris stiffness measurements according to intraobserver, interday, and interobserver ICC values.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery and serum endothelial biomarkers and to discuss the feasibility of sonographic evaluation of acute endothelial injury during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery. ⋯ A CPB event has a substantial impact on endothelial function, and sonographic assessment of the percentage of change in the brachial artery size during flow-mediated dilatation allows early detection of acute endothelial function injury in cardiac surgery.

Number of Weeks Rotating in the Emergency Department Has a Greater Effect on Ultrasound Milestone Competency Than a Dedicated Ultrasound Rotation.
Ultrasound (US) is vital to modern emergency medicine (EM). Across residencies, there is marked variability in US training. The "goal-directed focused US" part of the Milestones Project states that trainees must correctly acquire and interpret images to achieve a level 3 milestone. Standardized methods by which programs teach these skills have not been established. Our goal was to determine whether residents could achieve level 3 with or without a dedicated US rotation. ⋯ To achieve a level 3 milestone, weeks in the ED as a resident were significant for mastering image acquisition and interpretation. A dedicated US rotation did not have a significant effect. A medical school US rotation had a significant effect on image acquisition but not interpretation. Further studies are needed to best assess methods to meet US milestones.

Liver biopsy remains the reference standard for the assessment of liver fibrosis, but this procedure is invasive and can lead to complications. Thus, studies to determine the optimal noninvasive test are warranted. This study compared several noninvasive tests and their combinations for evaluating liver fibrosis stages in patients with chronic hepatitis B. ⋯ The SWV, APRI, and FIB-4 were valid tests for evaluating substantial liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. The combination of these tests with several noninvasive indicators is expected to enhance the assessment of liver fibrosis stages.
