Meeting abstracts to published manuscripts: how does emergency ultrasound compare?
Very little is known about publication rates of emergency ultrasound abstracts as peer-reviewed manuscripts in the years after their presentation at national meetings. The objectives of this study were to determine trends in publication patterns of emergency ultrasound abstracts presented at Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and American College of Emergency Physicians annual national meetings as full indexed articles in peer-reviewed journals and compare emergency ultrasound with emergency medical services (EMS) and toxicology subspecialties. ⋯ The emergency ultrasound manuscript publication rate and mean time to publication compare favorably with EMS and toxicology subspecialties.

The aim of this retrospective study was to compare intracranial arterial stenosis in patients with stroke using 3 different methods: transcranial color-coded duplex sonography, computed tomographic (CT) angiography, and digital subtraction angiography in a common clinical practice. ⋯ Moderate agreement was found between CT angiography, transcranial color-coded sonography, and digital subtraction angiography in the evaluation of intracranial stenosis. Computed tomographic angiography and digital subtraction angiography are sufficient for assessment of the diagnosis.

Ultrasound guidance is associated with improved efficiency and success of peripheral nerve blockade and a decreased incidence of vascular puncture, making these interventions safer. Patients with peripheral nerve blocks report decreased pain and increased satisfaction scores. We present the development of a mobile ultrasound-guided block service that allows for the safe and efficient placement of nerve blocks and perineural catheters at the nontraditional location of the patient's bedside and in the emergency department.

Comparison of sonography and computed tomography as imaging tools for assessment of airway structures.
The aim of this study was to compare airway anatomic parameters as measured by sonography and computed tomography (CT). ⋯ The study shows that sonography can reliably image all of the structures visualized by CT, and in general, infrahyoid parameters agree well between the two modalities, as opposed to suprahyoid parameters, which may be affected by unintentional head extension.

Ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia is commonly used for block placement. At present, the risk of cross contamination from probes is not well documented. To avoid transmission of infectious agents, several methods have been used for probe disinfection and protection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of a new high-level disinfection method based on ultraviolet C (UV-C) light under routine conditions after block placement with an unprotected probe. ⋯ Ultraviolet C disinfection seems relevant for ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia just before block placement. It offers simple, fast, and effective high-level disinfection. Moreover, this method should obviate the use of sterile probe covers, which can improve echogenicity.
