Several reports had observed a high risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), most of them in the intensive care unit. Reported findings indicate that a direct viral-mediated hyperinflammatory response leads to local thromboinflammation. According to those findings, the incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in patients with COVID-19 and PE should be low. The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of DVT in patients with COVID-19 who developed PE. ⋯ Our study showed a low incidence of DVT in a cohort of patients with COVID-19 and PE. This observation suggests that PE in these patients could be produced mainly by a local thromboinflammatory syndrome induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection and not by a thromboembolic event.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a handheld ultrasound device for difficult peripheral intravenous (PIV) access performed by nurses and paramedics in the emergency department (ED). ⋯ The handheld ultrasound device performed well in terms of usability and reliability for PIV access.

Ultrasound-Guided Hydrodissection With Corticosteroid Injection in the Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Pilot Study.
Corticosteroid injections can provide (temporary) relief in patients with mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Hydrodissection as part of an injection has been associated with positive clinical outcomes but data for CTS so far has been scarce. This study is designed to assess patient tolerance and secondarily provide pilot data on the added effect of hydrodissection. ⋯ After injection, both symptomatic and functional scores improved, but the hydrodissected group did not show additional improvement. Data presented can be used to support larger studies to assess the value of hydrodissection in CTS management.

To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the classic ultrasound (US) signs of adenomyosis, the question mark sign and transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) uterine tenderness, in the diagnosis of adenomyosis. ⋯ The question mark sign and TVUS uterine tenderness are useful tools for the diagnosis of adenomyosis.

Diagnosis of Acute Heart Failure Using Inferior Vena Cava Ultrasound: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
The utility of bedside inferior vena cava (IVC) ultrasound (US) in the diagnosis of heart failure (HF) is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine whether IVC parameters in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) are statistically different from those without HF. ⋯ Bedside IVC US showed that a statistically significant difference existed in the IVC parameters between patients with and without AHF. Based on mean calculations, an IVCexp of greater than 2.0 cm and an IVC-CI of less than 30% are reasonable cutoffs to suggest that a patient with acute dyspnea is more likely to have AHF than a non-AHF condition. Given the high degree of heterogeneity across the studies and the high risk of bias, larger randomized studies are warranted to explore the use of IVC US in patients with HF.
