An ectopic pregnancy after a hysterectomy is a rare event, with about 40 reported cases since it was first identified by Wendeler in 1895. There are even fewer cases reported of an ectopic pregnancy occurring years after a hysterectomy has been performed. ⋯ Many providers may automatically exclude an ectopic pregnancy as a possibility in the aforementioned clinical scenario if the patient has a history of a hysterectomy. Such automatic exclusion may result in life-threatening consequences.

Ultrasound is a versatile diagnostic modality used in a variety of medical fields. Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) is one of the first medical schools in the United States to integrate an ultrasound curriculum through both basic science courses and clinical clerkships. ⋯ As residency programs adopt ultrasound training, medical school faculty should consider incorporating ultrasound education into their curriculum. Portable ultrasound has the potential to be used in many different settings, including rural practice sites and sporting events. The WSUSOM committee's pilot ultrasound curriculum will continue to use student feedback to enhance the ultrasound experience, helping students prepare for challenges that they will face in the future.

Determining the correct position of endotracheal tubes in critically ill patients may be complicated by external factors such as noise, body habitus, and the need for ongoing resuscitation. Multiple detection techniques have been developed to determine the correct endotracheal tube position, recently including the use of sonography to evaluate lung expansion and diaphragmatic excursion. These techniques have also been applied to diagnosis of right endobronchial main stem intubation, which may be confused with a unilateral pneumothorax in some cases. ⋯ Clinical use of lung sonography may decrease the need for chest radiography and may allow more rapid diagnosis of main stem intubation and bronchial obstruction.

Comparative Study
Correlation of visual axis and coronal axis measurements of the optic nerve sheath diameter.
There are several approaches to sonographic imaging and measurement of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD). In this study, we sought to compare visual axis measurements of the optic nerve sheath (ONS) with traditional coronal axis measurements to assess for correlation. ⋯ Visual axis measurements do not reliably correlate with coronal axis measurements. The consistently larger diameter measured in the visual axis as well as the gradually increasing diameter posteriorly suggests measurement of an artifactual shadow rather than the true ONS.
