Accuracy of Resident-Performed Point-of-Care Lung Ultrasound Examinations Versus Chest Radiography in Pneumothorax Follow-up After Tube Thoracostomy in Rwanda.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and timeliness of resident-performed point-of-care lung ultrasound (LUS) examinations for the follow-up of pneumothorax (PTX) after tube thoracostomy. ⋯ A resident-performed LUS examination was a quicker imaging modality with superior sensitivity compared to clinician-interpreted CXR for PTX follow-up after tube thoracostomy in this Rwandan study. Lung ultrasound can be a valuable imaging tool for PTX follow-up, especially in resource-limited settings.

Obesity is a serious disorder that may lead to numerous difficulties in endotracheal tube (ETT) management. This study investigated the potential of tracheal ultrasound (TUS) for the accurate confirmation of the ETT position in obese patients. ⋯ Tracheal ultrasound is highly sensitive and specific in confirming the ETT position in obese patients.

Rethinking Viscosupplementation: Ultrasound- Versus Landmark-Guided Injection for Knee Osteoarthritis.
Viscosupplementation, intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA), for knee osteoarthritis has fallen somewhat out of favor, with studies failing to show consistent benefits in pain reduction. Hyaluronic acid must enter the joint space to be beneficial; however, landmark-guided injection can be substantially inaccurate, especially in obese patients. We aimed to determine whether ultrasound (US) guidance to ensure needle placement for HA knee injection resulted in improved outcomes as reflected by surgery-free survival compared to landmark-guided HA knee injection. ⋯ Knee osteoarthritis treatment by viscosupplementation can be optimized by US guidance, ensuring intra-articular needle placement. Using an objective surgical outcome, our study shows that rethinking viscosupplementation to ensure intra-articular delivery improves effectiveness. Patients receiving US-guided knee HA injection were significantly less likely to undergo subsequent knee arthroplasty than patients receiving landmark-guided HA injection.

To investigate the diagnostic accuracy and interobserver agreement among sonologists when assessing offline ultrasound (US) video sets of the "sliding sign" and among gynecologic surgeons when assessing corresponding laparoscopic video sets to predict pouch of Douglas (POD) obliteration and to compare the performance of the groups. ⋯ Interobserver agreement was superior among senior sonologists. Prediction of POD obliteration using offline US videos by senior sonologists is comparable to offline assessments of laparoscopic videos by advanced laparoscopists for prediction of POD obliteration.

Neck masses are a common reason for presentations to the pediatric emergency department (PED). We sought to determine the agreement and time difference between point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) imaging by pediatric emergency physicians compared to radiology department imaging for children with neck masses in the PED. ⋯ Point-of-care ultrasound imaging by pediatric emergency physicians for children with neck masses is a promising new POCUS application that may be able to save time in the PED.
