CircRBM33 regulates IL-6 to promote gastric cancer progression through targeting miR-149.
There is increasing evidence of the vital role played by circular RNAs (circRNAs) in the progression of gastric cancer (GC). A circRNA, hsa_circ_0001772, was generated from the RBM33 gene and named circRBM33. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of circRBM33 in GC. ⋯ After silencing circRBM33, the apoptosis of GC cells increased, while proliferation, migration, and invasion decreased. Rescue experiments indicated that circRBM33 manipulates biological function in GC cells through the circRBM33/miR-149/IL-6 axis. CircRBM33 can be used as a tumor biomarker and a possible therapeutic target in the future.

A novel multitarget kinase inhibitor BZG with potent anticancer activity in vitro and vivo enhances efficacy of sorafenib through PI3K pathways in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.
BZG as a novel multitarget kinase inhibitor, has been proved to inhibit the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) previously. In this study, we aimed at investigating the underlying mechanisms of BZG with and without sorafenib and evaluating their anti-tumor effects as well as whether BZG could inhibit the activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling which is associated with acquired resistance to sorafenib. ⋯ BZG is an attractive agent for treating HCC. The effects of BZG and sorafenib's co-treatment on HCC are more effective than BZG or sorafenib alone.

Increased levels of myeloid-derived suppressor cells in esophageal cancer patients is associated with the complication of sepsis.
To evaluate whether the level of myeloid-derived suppressor cells is related to the complication of sepsis after esophageal cancer surgery and whether changing the myeloid-derived suppressor cells levels can improve the prognosis of patients cancer-related sepsis. ⋯ A high level of G-MDSCs can be used to determine the incidence of sepsis in preoperative esophageal cancer patients, M-MDSCs might be effective prognostic indicators for cancer-sepsis patients, and changing the MDSC levels can improve the mortality of patients with cancer-related sepsis.

Curcumin regulates the differentiation of naïve CD4+T cells and activates IL-10 immune modulation against acute lung injury in mice.
Acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) is one type of respiratory failure characterized by rapid onset of widespread inflammation in the lungs. Curcumin has been reported to be an anti-inflammatory factor through enhancing the function of regulatory T cells (Tregs). This study aimed to explore the effect of curcumin on the differentiation of Tregs and the role of curcumin in ALI/ARDS. ⋯ Curcumin can reduce the degree of severity of ALI and uncontrolled inflammation through promoting the differentiation of naïve CD4 + T cells to CD4+ CD25+ FOXP3+ Tregs. Curcumin promotes the conversion of macrophages from M1 to M2. The differentiation of Tregs induced by curcumin may be one source of IL-10 immune modulation.

Effects of dexmedetomidine on lipopolysaccharide-induced acute kidney injury in rats and mitochondrial function in cell culture.
To investigate the mechanisms through which dexmedetomidine (DEX) could improve the renal injury in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and examine how TNF-α or DEX might affect mitochondrial function and renal injury. ⋯ DEX has protective effects for cells and tissues of the kidney by inhibiting oxygen consumption and hypoxia or by improving mitochondrial dysfunction via TNF-α in the renal cells. These results might point to DEX being an important new therapeutic target for the treatment of septic AKI.
