This research examines the following hypotheses: 1. the degree of Machiavellian orientation will be the same for hospital nursing administrators and nurse educators; and 2. head nurses will reveal high Machiavellian scores.

To move beyond illness-directed behaviors, a Recognizing/Needing graph directs nurses to present environmental stressors, needs and suggestions for future interventions. Assessment questions focus on illuminating meaning, synchronizing rhythms, and mobilizing transcendence, encouraging them to adopt health-directed behaviors.

Critically ill patients need their families more than ever, but rigid policies often restrict family visitation in ICU. Family visitation is not a "privilege" granted by hospitals, it is a necessary adjunct to the therapeutic regimen. Though changing outdated visitation policies can be difficult, it must be done. The clinical nurse specialist can play an important role in planning and implementing needed change.

Making the transition from an old setting to a new one includes much more than changing the place people report to work. Besides touring the new setting, nursing personnel should decide on locations for stock supply areas, as well as "experiencing" the unit before actual moving of patients. No policy and procedure changes should be made at this time except those directly related to the move. Strong leadership is essential during this stressful time.

DataBook is a computer application developed to assist the nurse manager in collecting, assessing and monitoring unit data on a day-to-day and summary basis. Once captured, this information can then be presented to create "information snapshots" of unit characteristics. Utilizing a PC-based spreadsheet program, the application is designed to be used by individuals with a modest degree of computer literacy.
