Cardiovascular and cancer mortality in very elderly post-myocardial infarction patients receiving statin treatment.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether statin treatment is effective and safe in very elderly (80 years and older) acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. ⋯ Statin treatment is associated with lower cardiovascular mortality in very elderly post-infarction patients without increasing the risk of the development of cancer.

New-onset atrial fibrillation predicts long-term mortality after coronary artery bypass graft.
We sought to investigate the association between new-onset atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) (post-operative atrial fibrillation [POAF]) and long-term mortality in patients with no history of atrial fibrillation. ⋯ In this large cohort of patients, POAF predicted long-term mortality. Warfarin anticoagulation may improve survival in POAF.

Randomized Controlled TrialB-type natriuretic peptide and the effect of ranolazine in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes: observations from the MERLIN-TIMI 36 (Metabolic Efficiency With Ranolazine for Less Ischemia in Non-ST Elevation Acute Coronary-Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction 36) trial.
We designed a prospective evaluation of the interaction between B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and the effect of ranolazine in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) as part of a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial. ⋯ Our findings indicate that ranolazine may have enhanced efficacy in high-risk patients with ACS identified by increased BNP. The interaction of biomarkers of hemodynamic stress and the effects of ranolazine warrants additional investigation. (Metabolic Efficiency With Ranolazine for Less Ischemia in Non-ST Elevation Acute Coronary Syndromes; NCT00099788).

Clinical TrialEfficacy of rosuvastatin among men and women with moderate chronic kidney disease and elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein: a secondary analysis from the JUPITER (Justification for the Use of Statins in Prevention-an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin) trial.
We evaluated the efficacy of statin therapy in primary prevention among individuals with moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ Rosuvastatin reduces first cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality among men and women with LDL-C <130 mg/dl, elevated hsCRP, and concomitant evidence of moderate CKD. (JUPITER-Crestor 20 mg Versus Placebo in Prevention of Cardiovascular [CV] Events; NCT00239681).

Clinical TrialEffect of cyclosporine on left ventricular remodeling after reperfused myocardial infarction.
This study examined the effect of a single dose of cyclosporine administered at the time of reperfusion on left ventricular (LV) remodeling and function by cardiac magnetic resonance 5 days and 6 months after myocardial infarction. ⋯ Cyclosporine used at the moment of acute myocardial infarction reperfusion persistently reduces infarct size and does not have a detrimental effect on LV remodeling. These results are preliminary and must be supported by further studies. (Ciclosporin A and Acute Myocardial Infarction; NCT00403728).
