Randomized Controlled TrialLong-term benefit of early pre-reperfusion metoprolol administration in patients with acute myocardial infarction: results from the METOCARD-CNIC trial (Effect of Metoprolol in Cardioprotection During an Acute Myocardial Infarction).
The goal of this trial was to study the long-term effects of intravenous (IV) metoprolol administration before reperfusion on left ventricular (LV) function and clinical events. ⋯ In patients with anterior Killip class ≤II STEMI undergoing pPCI, early IV metoprolol before reperfusion resulted in higher long-term LVEF, reduced incidence of severe LV systolic dysfunction and ICD indications, and fewer heart failure admissions. (Effect of METOprolol in CARDioproteCtioN During an Acute Myocardial InfarCtion. The METOCARD-CNIC Trial; NCT01311700).

Comparative StudyElevation of cardiac troponin T, but not cardiac troponin I, in patients with neuromuscular diseases: implications for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction.
This study sought to determine the clinical and biological significance of elevated cardiac troponin T (cTnT) in patients with neuromuscular diseases. ⋯ Patients with a wide spectrum of neuromuscular diseases commonly have persistent elevation of cTnT and CK-MB in the absence of clinical and cTnI evidence of myocardial injury. Re-expressed cTnT in diseased skeletal muscle appears to be the source of the elevated cTnT detected in the circulation of these patients.

Comparative Study Observational StudyLong-term survival following coronary artery bypass grafting: off-pump versus on-pump strategies.
This study sought to compare long-term survival after off- and on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ In patients undergoing elective isolated CABG, on-pump strategy conferred a long-term survival advantage compared with off-pump strategy.
