Comparative StudyDual antiplatelet therapy and heparin "bridging" significantly increase the risk of bleeding complications after pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator device implantation.
This study was designed to assess the risk of significant bleeding complications in patients receiving antiplatelet or anticoagulation medications at the time of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) device implantation. ⋯ Dual antiplatelet therapy and periprocedural heparin significantly increase the risk of bleeding complications at the time of pacemaker or ICD implantation.

The long- and short-term impact of elevated body mass index on the risk of new atrial fibrillation the WHS (women's health study).
The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationship between changes in body mass index (BMI) and incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in a large cohort of women. ⋯ In this population of apparently healthy women, BMI was associated with short- and long-term increases in AF risk, accounting for a large proportion of incident AF independent of traditional risk factors. A strategy of weight control may reduce the increasing incidence of AF. Randomized Controlled TrialImpact of high-dose N-acetylcysteine versus placebo on contrast-induced nephropathy and myocardial reperfusion injury in unselected patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. The LIPSIA-N-ACC (Prospective, Single-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized Leipzig Immediate PercutaneouS Coronary Intervention Acute Myocardial Infarction N-ACC) Trial.
The aim of this randomized, single-blind, controlled trial was to assess N-acetylcysteine effects on contrast-induced nephropathy and reperfusion injury in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing primary angioplasty with moderate contrast volumes. ⋯ High-dose intravenous N-acetylcysteine reduces oxidative stress. However, it does not provide an additional clinical benefit to placebo with respect to CIN and myocardial reperfusion injury in nonselected patients undergoing angioplasty with moderate doses of contrast medium and optimal hydration.
