Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyStatin therapy alters the relationship between apolipoprotein B and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol targets in high-risk patients: the MERCURY II (Measuring Effective Reductions in Cholesterol Using Rosuvastatin) trial.
The purpose of this analysis was to compare concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and apolipoprotein B (apoB) before and during statin therapy. ⋯ These data are consistent with the more aggressive cholesterol goals suggested for CHD patients, because achieving such targets also reduced apoB to the recommended level. Metallothionein suppresses angiotensin II-induced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase activation, nitrosative stress, apoptosis, and pathological remodeling in the diabetic heart.
We evaluated metallothionein (MT)-mediated cardioprotection from angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced pathologic remodeling with and without underlying diabetes. ⋯ Metallothionein suppresses Ang II-induced NOX-dependent nitrosative damage and cell death in both nondiabetic and diabetic hearts early in the time course of injury and prevents the late development of Ang II-induced cardiomyopathy.

Clinical TrialStrategic programming of detection and therapy parameters in implantable cardioverter-defibrillators reduces shocks in primary prevention patients: results from the PREPARE (Primary Prevention Parameters Evaluation) study.
Our purpose was to demonstrate that strategically chosen implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) detection and therapy parameters can reduce the combined incidence of device-delivered shocks, arrhythmic syncope, and untreated sustained symptomatic VT/VF (morbidity index). ⋯ Strategically chosen VT/VF detection and therapy parameters can safely reduce shocks and other morbidities associated with ICD therapy in patients receiving an ICD for primary prevention indications.
