Review Meta AnalysisEffects of beta-adrenergic antagonists in patients with chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The aim of this systematic review was to study the benefits and risks of beta-adrenergic antagonists (beta-blockers) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ Treatment with beta-blockers improved all-cause mortality in patients with CKD and chronic systolic heart failure. There is insufficient evidence to conclude whether people with CKD who are not known to have heart failure derive benefit from beta-blockers.

Meta Analysis Comparative StudyCulprit vessel only versus multivessel and staged percutaneous coronary intervention for multivessel disease in patients presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: a pairwise and network meta-analysis.
The purposes of this study were to investigate whether, in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and multivessel disease (MVD), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) should be confined to the culprit or also nonculprit vessels and, when performing PCI for nonculprit vessels, whether it should take place during primary PCI or staged procedures. ⋯ This meta-analysis supports current guidelines discouraging performance of multivessel primary PCI for STEMI. When significant nonculprit vessel lesions are suitable for PCI, they should only be treated during staged procedures.

Review Meta AnalysisThe predictive ability of pre-operative B-type natriuretic peptide in vascular patients for major adverse cardiac events: an individual patient data meta-analysis.
The aims of this study were to perform an individual patient data meta-analysis of studies using B-type natriuretic peptides (BNPs) to predict the primary composite endpoint of cardiac death and nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI) within 30 days of vascular surgery and to determine: 1) the cut points for a natriuretic peptide (NP) diagnostic, optimal, and screening test; and 2) if pre-operative NPs improve the predictive accuracy of the revised cardiac risk index (RCRI). ⋯ Pre-operative NP levels can be used to independently predict cardiovascular events in the first 30 days after vascular surgery and to significantly improve the predictive performance of the revised cardiac risk index.

Review Meta AnalysisPotassium intake, stroke, and cardiovascular disease a meta-analysis of prospective studies.
The objective of this study was to assess the relation between the level of habitual potassium intake and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). ⋯ Higher dietary potassium intake is associated with lower rates of stroke and might also reduce the risk of CHD and total CVD. These results support recommendations for higher consumption of potassium-rich foods to prevent vascular diseases.

Review Meta AnalysisEvidence of pre-procedural statin therapy a meta-analysis of randomized trials.
The purpose of this study was to summarize the evidence of pre-procedural statin therapy to reduce periprocedure cardiovascular events. ⋯ Statins administered before invasive procedures significantly reduce the hazard of post-procedural MI. Additionally, statins reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation after CABG. The routine use of statins before invasive procedures should be considered.
