Meta AnalysisAlcohol consumption and risk of atrial fibrillation: a prospective study and dose-response meta-analysis.
Although high alcohol consumption has been associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), the role of light to moderate drinking remains unclear. ⋯ These findings indicate that alcohol consumption, even at moderate intakes, is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyImproved functional status and quality of life in prohibitive surgical risk patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation after transcatheter mitral valve repair.
Surgical mitral valve repair (SMVR) remains the gold standard for severe degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR). However, the results with transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) in prohibitive-risk DMR patients have not been previously reported. ⋯ TMVR in prohibitive surgical risk patients is associated with safety and good clinical outcomes, including decreases in rehospitalization, functional improvements, and favorable ventricular remodeling, at 1 year. (Real World Expanded Multi-center Study of the MitraClip System [REALISM]; NCT01931956).

Prognostic significance of LGE by CMR in aortic stenosis patients undergoing valve replacement.
Prior studies have shown that late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) can detect focal fibrosis in aortic stenosis (AS), suggesting that it might predict higher mortality risk. ⋯ The presence of LGE indicating focal fibrosis or unrecognized infarct by CMR is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with AS undergoing AVR and could provide additional information in the pre-operative evaluation of risk in these patients.

Review Meta AnalysisPredictors of permanent pacemaker implantation in patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing TAVR: a meta-analysis.
Atrioventricular (AV) conduction disturbances requiring permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation may complicate transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Available evidence on predictors of PPM is sparse and derived from small studies. ⋯ Male sex, baseline conduction disturbances, and intraprocedural AV block emerged as predictors of PPM implantation after TAVR. This study provides useful tools to identify high-risk patients and to guide clinical decision making before and after intervention.
