Evaluation of Point-of-Care Ultrasound Training for Family Physicians Using Teleultrasound.
The goal of this study was to assess family physicians' change in knowledge and ability to perform abdominal aorta ultrasound after implementation of a novel teleultrasound curriculum. ⋯ After an 8-week teleultrasound curriculum, family physicians with minimal experience with POCUS showed improved knowledge and psychomotor skill in abdominal aorta POCUS.

The medical community has been concerned about the shortage of family physicians for decades. Identification of likely family medicine (FM) student matches early in medical school is an efficient recruitment tool. The objective of this study was to analyze qualitative data from medical school applications to establish themes that differentiate future family physicians from their non-FM counterparts. ⋯ Aided by machine learning, a novel analytical approach revealed key differences between FM and non-FM student application materials. Findings suggest qualitative application data may contain identifiable thematic differences when comparing students who eventually match into FM residency programs to those who match into other specialties. Assessing student potential for FM could help guide recruitment and mentorship activities.

In 2014, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented numeric requirements for family medicine (FM) pediatric patient encounters. Impact on residency programs is unclear. We aimed to identify any difficulties faced by FM program directors (PDs) meeting these numeric requirements. ⋯ Difficulty meeting ACGME requirements for the care of children in FM residency programs is common, especially for programs with fewer than 20% FMP patients under 19 years of age. Further research is needed to determine how best to assure FM resident competencies in the care of children and adolescents.
