Atmospheric transport of speciated mercury across southern Lake Michigan: Influence from emission sources in the Chicago/Gary urban area.
Quantifying the local and regional impacts of speciated mercury (Hg) emissions from major urban and industrial areas is critical for understanding Hg transport and cycling in the environment. The Chicago/Gary urban area is one location where Hg emissions from industrial sources are significant and the regional transport of emissions may contribute to elevated ambient Hg concentrations at downwind locations. From July to November 2007, we collected semi-continuous measurements of gaseous elemental Hg (Hg(0)), fine particulate bound Hg (Hgp), and divalent reactive gaseous Hg (RGM) in Chicago, IL and Holland, MI to characterize the impact of Chicago/Gary source emissions on Hg concentrations in southwest Michigan and to improve our overall understanding of speciated Hg transport and deposition. ⋯ We applied the HYSPLIT dispersion model to two case study periods to further quantify the impact of Chicago/Gary sources on southeast Michigan and investigate the role of direct transport and dispersion of speciated Hg emissions. Results suggested that more than 50% of the maximum RGM concentrations observed in Holland during the selected periods could be attributed to direct transport of primary RGM emissions from Chicago/Gary. The remaining RGM fractions are believed to be associated with Hg(0) oxidation during transport over Lake Michigan.

Assessment of the effects of oil sands naphthenic acids on the growth and morphology of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii using microscopic and spectromicroscopic techniques.
Naphthenic acid fraction components (NAFCs) are thought to be a primary agent of toxicity in oil sands process waters (OSPWs) produced by industrial activity in Canada's Athabasca oil sands. They are a complex, poorly characterized mixture of compounds whose mechanisms of toxicity are not well understood. In this work, it was discovered that the unicellular green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii are much more tolerant of NAFCs than predicted based on comparison to Chlamydomonas spp. isolated from the OSPW tailings ponds, with exponential growth occurring at 100 mg L(-1) NAFC. ⋯ Confocal scanning laser microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectromicroscopy indicated changes in cell wall surface proteins and their confirmation after exposure to NAFCs. Such alterations of cell wall proteins are consistent with the effects of surfactants on green algae, and indicate a possible role for classic naphthenic acids in the NAFC mixture to cause surfactant-mediated toxicity. The much greater tolerance to NAFCs under laboratory conditions indicates the likelihood that NAFCs do not act alone as agents of toxicity in algae such as C. reinhardtii, rather they seem to act in combination with other environmental factors to potentiate toxicity.

Dietary mercury exposure in a population with a wide range of fish consumption--self-capture of fish and regional differences are important determinants of mercury in blood.
Human, low level, chronic exposure to mercury (Hg) from fish is of concern because of potential neurodevelopmental and cardiovascular toxicity. The purpose of the study was to 1) measure total mercury (THg) in blood and estimate dietary exposure in a population group with a wide range of seafood consumption, 2) assess the intake and blood concentration in relation to tolerable intake values, 3) characterise dietary sources, and 4) to investigate the relationship between dietary THg with THg in blood (BTHg), including factors that can explain the variance in BTHg concentrations. The participants (n=184) filled in an extensive food frequency questionnaire which was combined with a database on THg concentrations in Norwegian food, and donated blood and urine. ⋯ Including urinary Hg in the regression model increased the explained variance from 54% to 65%. In a toxicokinetic model, the calculated dietary intake appeared to moderately underestimate the measured BTHg among the participants with the highest BTHg. Only two of the participants had BTHg slightly above a value equivalent to the JECFA PTWI, but none of them were women in fertile age.

The effects of beach nourishment on benthic invertebrates in eastern Australia: impacts and variable recovery.
Beach erosion is likely to accelerate, driven by predicted consequences of climate change and coastal development. Erosion is increasingly combated by beach nourishment, adding sand to eroding shores. Because a range of engineering techniques exists to nourish beaches, and because these techniques differ in their environmental effects, assessments of ecological impacts need to be tailored and specific. ⋯ These findings indicate that the height and position of sand placement are important. For example, rather than depositing fill sand on the intertidal beach, it could be placed in the shallow subtidal zone, followed by slow up-shore accretion driven by hydrodynamic forces. Alternatively, techniques that spread the fill sand in thin layers (to minimize mortality by burial) and leave unfilled intertidal refuge islands (to provide colonists) may minimize the ecological impacts of beach nourishment.

Top-cited articles in environmental sciences: merits and demerits of citation analysis.
The purpose of this study was to identify the top-cited articles published in environmental science journals listed in Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The Web of Science database was used to retrieve the top-cited articles having 500 or more total citations from their publication to 2010. The articles were analyzed with regard to institution and country of origin with five indicators including total number of top-cited articles, as well as independent, collaborative, first author, and corresponding author articles. ⋯ The U. S. Geological Survey was the most productive institution while, the Brunel University, UK published the most inter-institutionally collaborative and corresponding author articles under environmental science category.
