Influence of the South-North Water Diversion Project and the mitigation projects on the water quality of Han River.
Situated in the central part of China, the Han River Basin is undergoing rapid social and economic development with some human interventions to be made soon which will profoundly influence the water environment of the basin. The integrated MIKE 11 model system comprising of a rainfall-runoff model (NAM), a non-point load evaluation model (LOAD), a hydrodynamic model (MIKE 11 HD) and a water quality model (ECOLab) was applied to investigate the impact of the Middle Route of the South-North Water Diversion Project on the Han River and the effectiveness of the 2 proposed mitigation projects, the 22 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the Yangtze-Han Water Diversion Project. The study concludes that business as usual will lead to a continuing rapid deterioration of the water quality of the Han River. ⋯ The results reveal that serious water quality problem will emerge in the middle reach between Xiangfan and Qianjiang in the future. Implementation of the South-North Water Diversion Project (phase II) in 2030 will further exacerbate the problem. In order to effectively improve the water quality of the Han River, it is suggested that nutrient removal processes should be adopted in the proposed WWTPs, and the pollution load from the non-point sources, especially the load from the upstream Henan Province, should be effectively controlled.

Over the past decade, member states of the Regional Co-operation Agreement (RCA), an intergovernmental agreement for the East Asia and Pacific region under the auspices of the IAEA with the assistance of international organizations and financial institutions such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, have started to set in place policies and legislation for air pollution abatement. To support planning and evaluate the effectiveness of control programs, data are needed that characterizes urban air quality. The focus of this measurement program describe in this report is on size segregated particulate air pollution. ⋯ These data provide the input to receptor models that may permit the mitigation of these impacts by identification and quantitative apportionment of the particle sources. The aim of this report is to provide an overview of the measurements of concentrations and composition of particulate air pollution in two size fractions across the participating countries. For many of the large cities in this region, the measured particulate matter concentrations are greater than air quality standards or guidelines that have been adopted in developed countries.

The aim of this study is to explore whether lung cancer associated with air pollution has cell type specificity. The air quality data (SO(2), CO, O(3), NOx) from the Taiwan EPA's air quality monitoring stations were collected between 1995 and 1998. Patients with lung cancer were identified through the National Cancer Registration Program operated by the Taiwanese government. ⋯ Our results show that the worse the air pollution was in the area, the higher the AC rate, regardless of gender. On the other hand, SCC incidence rates did not increase with increasing air pollution. Our results show that a correlation exists between air pollution and lung adenocarcinoma incidence.

Transfer and behaviour of 137Cs in two Finnish lakes and their catchments.
The long-term behaviour of 137Cs was studied in two freshwater ecosystems in southern Finland in an area most loaded by the Chernobyl fallout in 1986. Samples were taken from water, sediments, aquatic plants and fish in the lakes and from soil, mushrooms and seed plants in the catchments. The activity concentrations of 137Cs in fish have remained at a relatively high level and decreased much more slowly in these two lakes than in other lakes studied by us. ⋯ This refers to the higher transfer from the catchment to the lake and the higher uptake of 137Cs by fish and other biota in Lake Siikajärvi than in Lake Vehkajärvi. Perch and pike were more efficient accumulators of caesium than the best indicators among the aquatic plants. In the terrestrial environment, caesium was most effectively accumulated by mushrooms.

Radiocarbon observations in atmospheric CO2: determining fossil fuel CO2 over Europe using Jungfraujoch observations as background.
Monthly mean 14CO2 observations at two regional stations in Germany (Schauinsland observatory, Black Forest, and Heidelberg, upper Rhine valley) are compared with free tropospheric background measurements at the High Alpine Research Station Jungfraujoch (Swiss Alps) to estimate the regional fossil fuel CO2 surplus at the regional stations. The long-term mean fossil fuel CO2 surplus at Schauinsland is 1.31+/-0.09 ppm while it is 10.96+/-0.20 ppm in Heidelberg. No significant trend is observed at both sites over the last 20 years. Strong seasonal variations of the fossil fuel CO2 offsets indicate a strong seasonality of emissions but also of atmospheric dilution of ground level emissions by vertical mixing.
