The C242T CYBA polymorphism of NADPH oxidase is associated with essential hypertension.
Oxidative stress is implicated in hypertension. The reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidases are the main source of superoxide in phagocytic and vascular cells. The C242T polymorphism of CYBA, the human gene that encodes p22phox, has been found to be functionally associated with vascular NADPH oxidase activity in atherosclerotic patients. We investigated the association of the C242T polymorphism with hypertension and its potential impact on NADPH oxidase activity. We also analysed the interaction of C242T polymorphism with the -930A/G CYBA variant. ⋯ The C242T CYBA polymorphism is associated with essential hypertension. Furthermore, hypertensives carrying the CC genotype of this polymorphism exhibit features of NADPH oxidase-mediated oxidative stress and endothelial damage.

Improvement in hypertension management in England: results from the Health Survey for England 2003.
To evaluate the mean levels of blood pressure and hypertension (> or = 140 mmHg systolic or > or = 90 mmHg diastolic pressure or on treatment for hypertension) in the adult English population, and to evaluate any changes in the efficacy of hypertension management between 1994 and 2003. ⋯ Hypertension management has improved greatly since 1994, with more awareness, treatment and control. Nevertheless, in 2003 the majority of hypertensive adults in England had blood pressure levels above the currently recommended targets.

Comparative StudyAntihypertensive drugs clonidine, diazoxide, hydralazine and furosemide regulate the production of cytokines by placentas and peripheral blood mononuclear cells in normal pregnancy.
Antihypertensive drugs such as clonidine, diazoxide, hydralazine and furosemide are used in the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy to control blood pressure, but it is not clear if they modulate the production of placental or circulating cytokines. ⋯ Our data suggest that the antihypertensive drugs clonidine and hydralazine can stimulate production of the circulating anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, whereas furosemide and diazoxide inhibit the production of this cytokine and the proinflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha and IL-6 by placentas and PBMCs.

Multicenter StudyKidney function and cardiovascular disease in the hypertensive population: the ERIC-HTA study.
Epidemiological data on the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease in chronic renal failure are scant The objective of the present study is to assess the relationship between renal function, measured by the estimated glomerular filtration rate, and the presence of early or established cardiovascular disease, in a population of hypertensives from primary care. ⋯ In hypertensive patients from primary care, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease is inversely proportional to the level of renal function. Estimated glomerular filtration is easy to determine and complements evaluation of the hypertensive patient.
