Review Case ReportsPrimary intraosseous meningioma: case report.
A case of 72-year-old Japanese woman with a rare intraosseous meningioma is presented. The tumor was located in the right frontoparietal region, involving the coronal suture. The tumor was excised totally and the pathological diagnosis was meningioma. Similar cases reported in the past literature are reviewed and the possible histogenetic mechanism of the tumor is discussed.

Diagnosis and treatment of patients with meningeal carcinomatosis.
The records of thirty-four patients with meningeal carcinomatosis treated at our hospital between 1984 and 1990 were reviewed. The sources, histologies, metastatic lesions outside the central nervous system, the history of the treatment of primary lesions and intraparenchymal of metastatic brain tumors and the period from the diagnosis of primary lesions and the treatment of intraparenchymal metastatic brain tumors to the diagnosis of meningeal carcinomatosis were investigated. Meningeal carcinomatosis was diagnosed and by neurological signs, CSF cytology, CT scan and MRI. ⋯ Moreover, CSF cytology became negative in 10 of 29 patients after a full course of intrathecal chemotherapy. Neurotoxicity Leukoencephalopathy, a neurotoxic effect of intrathecal chemotherapy was not observed in any of the patients. From these results, MTX in small doses is recommended for intrathecal chemotherapy of meningeal carcinomatosis to prevent neurotoxicity.

Comparative StudyDoes extent of surgery influence outcome for astrocytoma with atypical or anaplastic foci (AAF)? A report from three Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) trials.
103 patients with the diagnosis of AAF were identified from the RT/BCNU arms of 3 RTOG malignant glioma trials. Pre-treatment tumor size was less than 5 cm for 48% and greater than or equal to 5 cm for 52%, and tumor sites were frontal lobe in 55%, temporal in 25%, and parietal in 16%. Surgery consisted of biopsy for 30%, partial resection for 56%, and total resection for 14%. ⋯ Extent of surgery was not predictive. The close correlation between young age and extensive surgery obscures the survival advantage for greater surgery seen with univariate analysis. Smaller tumor size and frontal location favorably influence outcome even when adjusted by age.

Comparative StudyEpidemiology of seizures in children with brain tumors. The Childhood Brain Tumor Consortium.
We examined potential clinical and pathologic correlates of seizures among the 3,291 children in the Childhood Brain Tumor Consortium database. Fourteen percent had seizures prior to their hospitalization for a brain tumor. Among children who had a supratentorial tumor, seizures occurred in 22% of those less than 14 years of age. ⋯ All common tumor types that were represented in both the supratentorial and the infratentorial compartment except astrocytoma (nos) were associated with significantly greater rates of seizures when located in the supratentorial compartment. The tumor location with the highest incidence of seizures was, as expected, the superficial cerebrum. More than 40% of the children with such tumors had seizures.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
