Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, dehydroepiandrosterone, 5α-dihydroprogesterone and pregnenolone in women with migraine: Analysis of serum levels and correlation with age, migraine years and frequency.
Migraine is a very painful, disabling and extremely common disorder among the world's adult population, especially women, and it is associated with a variety of comorbidities. Neuroactive steroids exhibit pleiotropic actions on the nervous system. Alterations in their peripheral and central levels could be involved in the pathogenesis, still not fully understood, of migraine and its comorbidities. ⋯ These results parallel to previous studies showing reduced serum levels of allopregnanolone and pregnenolone sulfate in women with migraine. The low serum levels found for both excitatory and inhibitory neurosteroids suggested that women with migraine might suffer from inadequate neuroprotection, anti-inflammation activity and pain modulation. These deficits might underlie the migraine chronification process and represent the link between migraine and its various comorbidities.

Development and validation of UPLC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous quantification of anaplastic lymphoma kinase inhibitors, alectinib, ceritinib, and crizotinib in Wistar rat plasma with application to bromelain-induced pharmacokinetic interaction.
Bromelain, the aqueous extract of pineapple, has been used as a food supplement with reported nutritional and therapeutic benefits. Bromelain has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and fibrinolytic effects. Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors, including alectinib (ALC), ceritinib (CER), and crizotinib (CRZ), have been efficiently used in the management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ Bromelain administration caused a significant decrease in plasma levels of CER and CRZ with lowered Cmax, AUC0-t and AUC0-∞, along with an increase in the apparent clearance. However, no significant effect was noticed with ALC. Thus, attention should be paid to avoid the intake of bromelain with CER or CRZ.

Analysis of boswellic acids in dietary supplements containing Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) by Supercritical Fluid Chromatography.
Boswellic acids, a class of triterpenes, are the bioactive constituents in Indian frankincense, an herbal drug with pronounced anti-inflammatory activity. In this study their separation and quantification in B. serrata extracts is reported for the first time by using Supercritical Fluid Chromatography. ⋯ The method could easily be hyphenated to mass spectrometry, which was helpful to tentatively assign further compounds (mainly derivatives of tirucallic acid) and to increase the assay's sensitivity. Its practical applicability was confirmed by analyzing several commercial products, which mainly contained β-boswellic acid as dominant triterpene, yet in extremely variable amounts ranging from 0.9 to 16.9 %.

Integrated omics and bioinformatics analyses for the toxic mechanism and material basis of Sophorae Tonkinensis radix et rhizome-induced hepatotoxicity.
In traditional Chinese medicine theory, Sophorae Tonkinensis radix et rhizome (ST) has the effects of treating tonsillitis, sore throats, and heat-evil-induced diseases. However, the utilization of ST is relatively restricted owing to its toxicity. The previous studies have made some progress on the mechanism and material basis of ST-induced hepatotoxicity, but there is still no significant breakthrough. ⋯ Bioinformatics showed that 20 compounds may interfere with the expression of 7 toxic targets of ST. Multiple toxic targets of ST-induced hepatotoxicity were found in the study, whose dysregulation may trigger hepatocyte necrosis/apoptosis, liver metastasis, and liver cirrhosis. Multiple compounds may be the toxic material basis in response to these effects.

An integrated approach to reveal the chemical changes of Ligustri Lucidi Fructus during wine steaming processing.
Ligustri Lucidi Fructus (LLF) is a traditional Chinese medicine to treat osteopathic and hepatic diseases. Wine steaming is the major processing method for LLF in Chinese Pharmacopoeia, but the chemical changes involved are still unclear. In this study, a research strategy was proposed to reveal the chemical changes during wine steaming processing of LLF. ⋯ The contents of 4 esters decreased from 3.64% to 2.71%, and the contents of 3 potential hydrolysis products increased from 0.27% to 0.88% after processing. Our study indicated that hydrolysis of iridoid and phenylethanoid esters such as specneuzhenide was responsible for the chemical changes during the wine processing of LLF. The proposed strategy could be employed to investigate the chemical changes of other herbs during processing.
