Observational Study
Apneic oxygenation to prevent oxyhemoglobin desaturation during rapid sequence intubation in a pediatric emergency department.
Apneic oxygenation is the delivery of oxygen to the nasopharynx during intubation. It may mitigate the risk of oxyhemoglobin desaturation but has not been well-studied in children. ⋯ In an observational, video-based study of pediatric patients, apneic oxygenation was not associated with a lower risk of oxyhemoglobin desaturation during RSI.

Emergency department visits for electric scooter-related injuries after introduction of an urban rental program.
Providers in Salt Lake City emergency departments (EDs) anecdotally noted a significant number of electronic scooter (e-scooter)-related injuries since the launch of e-scooter rentals in the downtown area in June 2018. The aim of this study was to quantify and characterize these injuries. ⋯ Since the launch of e-scooter share programs in Salt Lake City, we have seen a substantial increase in e-scooter related trauma in our EDs. Of particular note is the number of patients with major head injuries and major musculoskeletal injuries.

Most soft tissue neck masses represent benign inflammatory or infectious processes; however, in some cases the diagnosis is not clear and a broader differential must be considered. The aim of this study was to compare point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to radiology department imaging (RDI) in the diagnosis of soft tissue neck masses. ⋯ This prospective pilot study describes the reliability of POCUS as an imaging modality in the management of patients with undifferentiated soft tissue neck masses. POCUS demonstrated good agreement with RDI as a bedside imaging tool in the evaluation of pediatric soft tissue neck masses.

Review Case Reports
Cardioversion of pre-excited atrial fibrillation leading to ventricular fibrillation- case report and review of literature.
Pre-excited, fast conducting atrial fibrillation (AF) is a serious life-threatening arrhythmia that requires urgent pharmacological or electrical cardioversion. When anti-arrhythmic medications fail to restore sinus rhythm, biphasic, direct current (DC) cardioversion is required. ⋯ Since the QRS-T complexes in pre-excited AF are severely distorted, the diagnosis of inaccurate synchronization may be overlooked. Here, we report a unique case where during electrical cardioversion of pre-excited AF with inappropriate synchronization on the T wave inadvertently resulted in ventricular fibrillation (VF), and review the literature.

To establish a standardized approach for the rapid and accurate identification of non-traumatic, ophthalmologic pathology in patients with eye complaints in the emergency department. ⋯ This protocol can help identify patients that may need urgent ophthalmology consultation those that can follow-up on an outpatient, and those that may need additional emergent testing.
