Both hyperkalemia (HK) and Acute Heart Failure (AHF) are associated with increased short-term mortality, and the management of either may exacerbate the other. As the relationship between HK and AHF is poorly described, our purpose was to determine the relationship between HK and short-term outcomes in Emergency Department (ED) AHF. ⋯ In ED AHF, initial sK >4.8 mEq/L was independently associated with in-hospital mortality, suggesting that this cohort may benefit from aggressive HK treatment.

To deal with emergency department (ED) crowding, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) established a task force to develop a list of low-cost, high-impact solutions. In this study, we report on the trend in the adoption rate of ACEP-recommended ED crowding interventions by US hospitals. ⋯ The adoption rate of ED crowding interventions by hospitals has risen, however most effective ED crowding interventions are still underutilized. The trends for each intervention did not always increase linearly, with certain periods showing greater fluctuations in adoption rate. Hospitals tend to implement technology-based interventions, compared to physical-based interventions and flow modification interventions.

The 2023 Match saw over 500 unfilled positions in emergency medicine (EM). Geographic location is the third most important factor for all United States (US) EM-bound senior medical students when selecting programs to rank and can be affected by political climate. Given the perceived importance of geography on program selection and recent changes to reproductive rights in the US, we sought to evaluate the impact of geography and reproductive rights on unmatched positions among EM programs. ⋯ We identified notable differences in unmatched positions by US state and region, as well as the highest rate of unmatched positions in US states with more limited reproductive rights.

Type A Aortic Dissection (TAAD) is a surgical emergency with a time-dependent rate of mortality. We hypothesized that a direct-to-operating room (DOR) transfer program for patients with TAAD would reduce time to intervention. ⋯ Creation of a DOR program resulted in decreased time to intervention. This was associated with a decrease in observed-to-expected operative mortality. The transfer of patients with acute type A aortic dissection to centers with direct-to-OR programs may result in decreased time from diagnosis to surgery.

Dental abscesses are a common reason patients present to the emergency department (ED). Facial and dental imaging are sometimes necessary to support the clinical diagnosis. While radiographs and computed tomography scans are frequently used, point-of-care ultrasound (US) offers several advantages, including decreased radiation exposure, reduced costs, and shorter patient length of stay. This report outlines the use of US in evaluating patients with suspected dental abscesses in the ED. ⋯ US presents several advantages as an alternative imaging method for patients with suspected dental abscesses in the ED. Using innovative techniques such as the OHS and the TPT can further increase the visibility of tissue planes and help define the area of interest in these cases.
