Patients and caregivers often fear uncontrolled pain, and need frequent reassurance that effective pain control can be achieved. This article discusses the etiology and types of cancer pain, pain assessment, pharmacologic pain management interventions, and evaluation of pain management for home care patients.

Restless legs syndrome affects millions, but most healthcare providers don't know it exists. Its sleep-deprived victims are plagued by indescribable crawling sensations in their legs that occur at night and that are only relieved by moving the legs. Many home healthcare clients, already challenged by their primary illness, are also affected by the persistent symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome. It is important that home care nurses learn about Restless Legs Syndrome-what it is, how to assess it, and what can be done about it.

A study of the relationship between home care services and hospital readmission of patients with congestive heart failure.
Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) constitute a substantial portion of the caseloads of home care agencies. Home care is one strategy suggested for delaying or preventing hospital readmissions. ⋯ It also described the home nursing care of such patients. Findings indicate that patients receiving home care nursing services were readmitted to the hospital significantly less often within a period of 90 days after hospital discharge.

Home health aide services: barriers perceived by dementia family caregivers.
This study explored barriers to using home health aide services as perceived by family caregivers of relatives with dementia. The authors analyzed data collected from interviews of 32 family caregivers of relatives with dementia. ⋯ Caregivers in many cases indicated that the price paid for services outweighed benefits; however they continued to use home health aide services. Implications for home healthcare nurses are discussed.
