Impact of the direct transfer to percutaneous coronary intervention-capable hospitals on survival to hospital discharge for patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Patients suffering from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are frequently transported to the closest hospital. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is often indicated following OHCA. This study's primary objective was to determine the association between being transported to a PCI-capable hospital and survival to discharge for patients with OHCA. The additional delay to hospital arrival which could offset a potential increase in survival associated with being transported to a PCI-capable center was also evaluated. ⋯ It could be advantageous to redirect patients suffering from OHCA patients to PCI-capable centers if the resulting expected delay is of less than 14 min.

Organ support therapy in the intensive care unit and return to work in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors-A nationwide cohort study.
With increased survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), impact of the post-resuscitation course has become important. Among 30-day OHCA survivors, we investigated associations between organ support therapy in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and return to work. ⋯ In 30-day survivors of OHCA, number of organ support therapies and in particular need of RRT were associated with reduced rate of return to work, although more than half of these latter patients still returned to work.

Validation of an ICD code for accurately identifying emergency department patients who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
International classification of disease (ICD-9) code 427.5 (cardiac arrest) is utilized to identify cohorts of patients who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), though the use of ICD codes for this purpose has never been formally validated. We sought to validate the utility of ICD-9 code 427.5 by identifying patients admitted from the emergency department (ED) after OHCA. ⋯ ICD-9 code 427.5 is sensitive and specific for identifying ED patients who suffer OHCA with a positive predictive value of 92%.

Survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in nursing homes - A nationwide study.
Survival among nursing home residents who suffers out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is sparsely studied. Deployment of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in nursing home facilities in Denmark is unknown. We examined 30-day survival following OHCA in nursing and private home residents. ⋯ Average 30-day survival after OHCA was very low in nursing home residents, but those who received early resuscitative efforts had higher chance of survival.

To evaluate the performance of a state-of-the-art cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) artefact suppression method by assessing to what extent the filtered electrocardiogram (ECG) can be correctly diagnosed by emergency medicine doctors. ⋯ Clinicians outperformed the SAA, but specificities remained below the specifications recommended by the American Heart Association. Visual assessment of the filtered ECG by clinicians is not reliable enough, and varies greatly among clinicians. Results considerably improve by considering the consensus decision of a pool of clinicians.
