Randomized Controlled Trial
Safety and immunogenicity of IMVAMUNE, a promising candidate as a third generation smallpox vaccine.
A Phase I trial was performed to investigate the safety and immunogenicity of the third generation smallpox vaccine MVA-BN (IMVAMUNE), a highly attenuated clone derived from the Modified Vaccinia Virus Ankara strain 571, in naive and pre-immunized subjects. A total of 86 healthy subjects received the vaccine in five groups using different doses and routes of administration. ⋯ The results indicate that MVA-BN has the potential to be developed as an efficient and safe alternative to the conventional smallpox vaccines such as Lister-Elstree or Dryvax. Unique attributes render it a promising candidate for prophylactic mass immunization, even in subjects for whom conventional smallpox vaccines are contraindicated.

Comparative Study
Immunogenicity of aerosol measles vaccine given as the primary measles immunization to nine-month-old Mexican children.
Aerosol measles vaccination has been found to be more immunogenic than subcutaneous administration as a booster in school aged children, and immunogenic in 12-month-old children as a primary dose. The objective of the study was to evaluate immunogenicity to aerosol measles vaccine in 9-month-old children. ⋯ The proportion of 9-month-old infants who developed cellular and/or humoral immunity to measles was lower in the aerosol group but measles antibody and T cell responses were comparable among those who developed measles immunity. Differences in response rates are attributable to the lower aerosol dose. Improving aerosol delivery or increasing the dose may enhance immunogenicity of primary aerosol measles vaccination in this age group.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Comparison of the safety and immunogenicity of hepatitis B virus surface antigen co-administered with an immunostimulatory phosphorothioate oligonucleotide and a licensed hepatitis B vaccine in healthy young adults.
Many individuals do not respond to a three-dose series of hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) and most do not achieve a protective antibody response until after dose 2 or 3. ⋯ Protective levels are achieved more quickly and after fewer doses of HBV-ISS than Engerix-B. HBV-ISS is well tolerated but associated with more mild injection-site tenderness than Engerix-B.

Avian influenza viruses represent a growing threat for an influenza pandemic. To develop recombinant vaccine for avian influenza of the H9N2 subtype, we expressed in insect cells virus-like particles (VLPs) consisting of three structural proteins of influenza A/Hong Kong/1073/99 (H9N2) virus. ⋯ In BALB/c mice, VLPs elicited serum antibodies specific for influenza A/Hong Kong/1073/99 (H9N2) virus and inhibited replication of the influenza virus after challenge. Thus, VLPs represent a potential strategy for the development of human vaccines against avian influenza H9N2 viruses.

Influenza continues to be a considerable health problem in Europe. Vaccination is the only preventive measure, reducing mortality and morbidity of influenza in all age groups. ⋯ The vaccination coverage during the second season increased in comparison to the first season. The family doctor is the most important source of encouragement for people to be vaccinated against influenza. It seems that the public would be more likely to be vaccinated if they had more information on the efficacy and tolerance of the vaccine, as well as the disease. We, therefore, suggest that family doctors be better informed on influenza vaccine and the disease itself, so that they can actively inform their patients on these topics.
