Randomized Controlled Trial
Usefulness of Endoflex endotracheal tube for oral and nasal tracheal intubations.
We investigated the usefulness of an Endoflex tracheal tube, the tip of which can be bent forward by pulling on a wire held in the hand, for oral and nasal endotracheal intubations without a stylet, in comparison with tracheal intubation using a conventional endotracheal tube and a stylet/Magill forceps. ⋯ The Endoflex endotracheal tube represents a beneficial tool for smooth oral and nasal intubation without requiring assistance or adjuvant equipment.

Personality factors have been found to influence long-term postoperative depressive symptoms, health and distress in inpatients. To our knowledge, no studies have analysed whether the personality traits of day surgery patients relate to postoperative recovery. Hence, this study aims to explore possible relationships between personality traits and the quality of postoperative recovery in patients undergoing day surgery. ⋯ Day surgery patients appear to be a homogenous group with stable personalities, demonstrating some minor correlations between personality traits and the quality of postoperative recovery on days 1, 7 and 14. However, further studies are needed.

Inhaled anaesthetics have been studied regarding their genotoxic and mutagenic potential in vivo. Propofol differs from volatile anaesthetics because it does not show mutagenic effects and it has been reported to be an antioxidant. However, there are no studies with propofol and genotoxicity in vivo. The study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that propofol is not genotoxic and it inhibits lipid peroxidation [malondialdehyde (MDA)] in patients undergoing propofol anaesthesia. ⋯ Propofol does not induce DNA damage in WBCs and does not alter MDA in plasma of patients.

Comparative Study
Cerebral state index vs. bispectral index during sevoflurane-nitrous oxide anaesthesia.
The cerebral state index (CSI) is a low-cost and compact electroencephalographic monitor alternative to the bispectral index (BIS). Although both indices are shown as the number between 0 and 100, owing to the different calculation algorithms, both indices might be different during anaesthesia. The present study was performed to compare the BIS and CSI during sevoflurane-nitrous oxide anaesthesia. ⋯ During sevoflurane-nitrous oxide anaesthesia, the CSI was not significantly different from the BIS in the awake state and with sevoflurane concentration 0.5-1.5%.
