Comparative Study
Comparison of the outer diameter of the 'best-fit' endotracheal tube with MRI-measured airway diameter at the cricoid level.
In this study, we evaluated the ratio of the outer diameter of an uncuffed Mallinckrodt endotracheal tube (ETT, Mallinckrodt Tyco Healthcare UK Ltd) to the MRI-measured internal transverse airway diameter (ITD) at the cricoid level in children. ⋯ The outer diameter of the 'best-fit' ETT was less than the ITD at the cricoid level by 0.1-1.7 mm. The correlation of the outer diameter of the 'best-fit' ETT with age was stronger than with height or weight.

The blind intubation device is a newly developed light-guided intubation device for difficult nasotracheal intubation. The aim of this study was to evaluate its performance in adult patients with anticipated difficult airways. ⋯ We have demonstrated the safe and effective use of the blind intubation device in 100 adult patients with anticipated difficult airways. The overall success rates of the oesophagus airway placement, the light-guiding catheter insertion and nasotracheal intubation over the light-guiding catheter were really satisfied. This technique could improve the success of blind nasal intubation, especially in situations in which fibreoptic equipment was unavailable. However, further studies are still required.

The number of fluctuations in skin conductance per second has been shown to correlate with postoperative pain. In this context, the effects of cholinesterase inhibitors and anticholinergic drugs used for the reversal of muscle relaxants were investigated. ⋯ Skin conductance-based assessment of pain is affected by reversal agents.

Postanaesthesia care units are standard parts of hospital care in most European Union countries. Their main purpose is to identify and immediately treat early complications of surgery or anaesthesia, before they develop into deleterious problems. This review, prepared by the Working Party on Post Anaesthesia Care of the European Board of Anaesthesiology. European Union of Medical Specialists (Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes) and approved by the European Board and Section of Anaesthesiology, gives recommendations on relevant aspects of organization, responsibilities, methods, safety and quality control of postanaesthesia care.
