Randomized Controlled Trial
Effect of menstrual cycle on the injection pain due to propofol.
This prospective, double-blind and randomized study is designed to determine the effect of menstrual cycle on the injection pain of propofol. ⋯ We conclude that the menstrual phase changes the perception of pain due to propofol injection, which is higher in the lutheal phase. In clinical practice, the phases of the menstrual cycle may have a significant role on injection pain of propofol in woman.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Cardiovascular responses and airway complications following awake nasal intubation with blind intubation device and fibreoptic bronchoscope: a randomized controlled study.
The blind intubation device (BID) was introduced for awake nasotracheal intubation recently. The aim of this study was to compare the cardiovascular responses and associated airway complications of fibreoptic bronchoscope (FOB) with those of BID. The intubation attempts and intubation time were also compared. ⋯ Both FOB and BID caused similarly slight cardiovascular responses during awake nasotracheal intubation in normotensive adults. The intubation-associated airway complications were similar.

The aim of the study was to examine a possible relationship between the extent of preoperative chronic pain and the development of moderate-to-severe acute postoperative pain. ⋯ This study demonstrated that higher degrees of preoperative chronic pain were associated with the development of more intense pain after radical prostatectomy. Preoperative psychological distress and reduced physical health were associated with a marked increase in postoperative pain intensity.

Robot-assisted prostatectomy requires pneumoperitoneum in a steep Trendelenburg position, which may induce endobronchial intubation or accidental extubation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of pneumoperitoneum in 30 degrees Trendelenburg position on the displacement of the tracheal tube and to measure the changes in trachea length using fiberoptic bronchoscope. ⋯ The confirmation of the tracheal tube position is recommended after pneumoperitoneum in steep Trendelenburg position during robot-assisted prostatectomy because the displacement of the tracheal tube may result in endobronchial intubation due to shortening of the carina-to-tube tip distance.

Etomidate is often used to induce anaesthesia in sick patients owing to its relative cardiovascular stability. However, etomidate affects adrenal cortical activity, and there is concern that this could impair outcome in patients undergoing emergency surgery. ⋯ We found no evidence that etomidate is associated with worse outcome than thiopental or propofol in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy, but we cannot be certain that etomidate is well tolerated in this group of patients. More data are required to address this issue definitively.
