To examine the association of in-hospital diabetes regimen intensification with subsequent 30-day risk for unplanned readmission/emergency department admission. ⋯ Diabetes medical regimen intensification during hospitalization was not associated with early readmission. Among patients with elevated HbA(1c) , glucose therapy intensification was associated with a decreased 30-day readmission/emergency department admission risk and lower outpatient HbA(1c) levels. Our findings support the safety and durable impact of diabetes regimen optimization during hospital admission.

Hypoglycaemia is associated with increased length of stay and mortality in people with diabetes who are hospitalized.
To study the length of stay and inpatient mortality of patients with diabetes who had an episode of hypoglycaemia in a non critical care setting at University Hospital Birmingham, UK. ⋯ Hypoglycaemia is associated with increased length of stay and inpatient mortality. Whilst causative evidence is lacking, our data are consistent with the need to avoid hypoglycaemia in our current and continued approach for optimal glycaemic control in people with diabetes admitted to hospital.

Haemoglobin A(1c) , acute hyperglycaemia and short-term prognosis in patients without diabetes following acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.
To assess the prognostic impact of HbA(1c) and blood glucose level in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and without diabetes. The relationship between HbA(1c) and acute hyperglycaemia was also explored. ⋯ Unlike acute hyperglycaemia, an elevated HbA(1c) level was not a risk factor for short-term outcomes in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients without diabetes. Patients with acute hyperglycaemia and non-elevated HbA(1c) were associated with the worst prognosis. That suggests chronic glycaemic control/HbA(1c) level may help to recognize stress-induced hyperglycaemia and identify high-risk patients.

To evaluate the performance of the FINDRISC questionnaire as a tool to recruit individuals with impaired glucose tolerance for lifestyle intervention programmes. ⋯ The FINDRISC questionnaire is a useful instrument for identification of individuals with impaired glucose metabolism but seems less effective for detection of individuals with impaired glucose tolerance. Strategies to find individuals with impaired glucose tolerance for implementation of lifestyle changes in primary care should therefore be developed further.
