Addressing poverty, education, and gender equality to improve the health of women worldwide.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) that target alleviating poverty, improving primary education, and fostering gender equity are important as a foundation to promote world health. Achieving these goals will create an environment for healthy lives for women and children. Poverty, education, and gender equality, although undeniably linked, need to be addressed individually. Nurses have the capacity and political will to address MDGs and to contribute to the health and well-being of the world population.

ReviewA review of the psychometric properties of breastfeeding assessment tools.
To compare and contrast the clinical usefulness and psychometric properties of existing self-report instruments designed to assess maternal breastfeeding attitudes, experience, satisfaction, and confidence. ⋯ Seven self-report instruments were found to be valid, reliable, and feasible measures for assessing breastfeeding relationships. But two of the seven self-report instruments were only tested in one study, and only one study used a self-report instrument (the Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool-BAPT) to test the effectiveness of an intervention. It is recommended that researchers consider using the existing self-report instruments in future experimental studies to test the feasibility and effectiveness of breastfeeding interventions. Moreover, it is important to continue to conduct more well designed research to further test and refine these self-report instruments in a variety of diverse populations and ethnic groups and to further examine their psychometric properties. Clinical applications have not been well addressed and need to be considered in the design of these future works. Understanding how to best support the breastfeeding mother must be the long-term outcome of instrument development in this area.

Mothers' different styles of involvement in preterm infant pain care.
To describe and understand how mothers utilize the opportunity to actively participate in their preterm infants' pain care using facilitated tucking by parents (FTP). ⋯ This study showed that mothers' are willing to actively participate in their preterm infants' pain care. However, the participation is unique according to mother and her experiences before and during NICU admission. Nurses need to consider these differences in mothers when involving them in preterm infants' pain care.

Emergency preparedness and disaster response core competency set for perinatal and neonatal nurses.
A nationally derived consensus-based core competency set provides perinatal and neonatal nurses a template to guide emergency preparedness and disaster response educational and training activities. Moreover, this consensus-based core competency set allows for the identification and incorporation of measurable objectives that address the learning needs of nurses as well as the unique needs of pregnant women, new mothers, and infants during public health emergencies and disaster events.
