The fifth vital sign: implementation of the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale.
Several psychometric tools are available to assess pain in the neonate. Although clinically tested, most of these tools have not been integrated into the assessment of the well newborn. ⋯ The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale provides a measure of the intensity of an infant's response to pain. This article describes a hospital's implementation of the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale, including the education provided to nurses and utilization of the tool in the assessment of well newborns.

Breastfeeding knowledge, breastfeeding confidence, and infant feeding plans: effects on actual feeding practices.
To explore relationships among breastfeeding knowledge, breastfeeding confidence, and infant feeding plans and their effects on feeding practices in first-time breastfeeding mothers. ⋯ Expectations and the actual breastfeeding experience differed among women planning to combination feed and those planning to exclusively breastfeed. Whether a cause or consequence, daily human milk substitute feeding was associated with negative breastfeeding outcomes.

Bedside assessment of heel lance pain in the hospitalized infant.
To evaluate a method of pain assessment to be used for hospitalized infants requiring blood test by a heel lance procedure. ⋯ Modifications have been made to the method of procedural pain assessment to be used in a subsequent study. The modified method is expected to be a reliable measure of procedural pain caused by a heel lance and can easily be used at the bedside during the course of further research.
