Urinary tract infection during pregnancy: a risk factor for cerebral palsy?
To assess a possible association of urinary tract infection (UTI) during pregnancy and cerebral palsy in offspring. ⋯ Urinary tract infection during pregnancy was found to be a risk factor for development of cerebral palsy in offspring. Assessment for UTI should occur at the initial prenatal visit and more frequently for women with symptoms or who are at risk. Pregnant women should be educated about preventive measures for UTI. Future research is needed to assess more directly the relationship between UTI during pregnancy and cerebral palsy in offspring.

Metabolic bone disease in very-low-birth-weight infants: assessment, prevention, and treatment by neonatal nurse practitioners.
To describe the current practice of neonatal nurse practitioners in assessing skeletal health and preventing and treating metabolic bone disease in very-low-birth-weight infants. ⋯ Neonatal nurse practitioners underestimate the incidence of metabolic bone disease. Parenteral calcium and phosphorous are given but in quantities that differ from the recommended ratio. Most neonatal nurse practitioners use formulas made for premature infants and add powdered fortifier to expressed breast milk. Although physical therapy is prescribed, more research on its effect on bone mineralization is warranted before this practice is recommended without reservation.

ReviewThe laryngeal mask airway: potential applications in neonatal health care.
The laryngeal mask airway is a completely new concept in airway management and has the potential to provide a third airway option for the neonate. The device sits in the hypopharynx at the interface between the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, where it forms a circumferential low-pressure seal around the glottis. This article provides an overview of the laryngeal mask airway and focuses on its potential as a neonatal airway outside the operating room.

Reliability and validity testing of three breastfeeding assessment tools.
This study examined validity and reliability of three clinical instruments that assess feedings at the breast. ⋯ The IBFAT, MBA, and LATCH as tools to measure breastfeeding effectiveness are not sufficiently reliable at this stage in their development; thus, these tools cannot be valid for clinical use. These tools need to be revised and retested before use in clinical practice to identify breastfeeding mother-infant pairs who need intervention.

Health care in the 1990s: changes in health care delivery models for survival.
Changes in the health care environment are causing health care providers to review and re-engineer the provision of perinatal and women's health care. Expanded programs need to be developed using alternative levels of care. Employers, payers, and providers have a unique opportunity to band together in effecting changes in care from the traditional illness model to a more current wellness/health promotion/ prevention model. New areas to explore include life care partners/case managers and virtual health management.
