Multicenter StudyBarriers and facilitators to implementing the Baby-Friendly hospital initiative in neonatal intensive care units.
To explore manager, educator, and clinical leader perceptions of barriers and facilitators to implementing Baby-Friendly practice in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). ⋯ Despite identifying numerous barriers, participants recognized the potential value of expanding the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) to the NICU setting. Recommendations include promoting BFHI as a facilitator of family-centered care, interdisciplinary staff education, increasing access to lactation consultants, and establishing a group of NICU champions dedicated to BFHI implementation.

An interprofessional quality improvement project to implement maternal/infant skin-to-skin contact during cesarean delivery.
Immediate skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn has been associated with successful breastfeeding outcomes. One of the challenges nurses face in promoting skin-to-skin occurs in the operating room during a cesarean delivery. Utilizing an interprofessional approach for this quality improvement project, we successfully implemented skin-to-skin contact for all eligible mother/infant couplets after cesarean birth. Exclusive breastfeeding rates for these women increased as a result.

Review Meta AnalysisAn integrative review of factors that influence breastfeeding duration for premature infants after NICU hospitalization.
To determine what factors affect breastfeeding duration after discharge home from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for high-risk mothers and their premature infants. ⋯ Mothers face many challenges breastfeeding their premature infants after NICU discharge. Ideally, all mothers need to receive support after NICU discharge, and the transition to home can be challenging even if breastfeeding is well established. However, NICU professionals are in a perfect position to provide guidance to families so they are able to anticipate and effectively solve lactation challenges at home.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyHeat loss prevention (help) after birth in preterm infants using vinyl isolation bag or polyethylene wrap.
To examine the effects of using vinyl isolation bags or polyethylene wrap for the prevention of postnatal hypothermia in preterm infants at ≤ 32 weeks gestation. ⋯ Wrapping preterm infants of gestational age ≤ 32 weeks in vinyl bags immediately after birth is associated with lower incidences of hypothermia.

Comparative Study Observational StudyComparison of complication rates between umbilical and peripherally inserted central venous catheters in newborns.
To compare the complication rates between umbilical central venous catheters and peripherally inserted central venous catheters in newborns and to investigate whether other variables might increase complication rates. ⋯ A high complication incidence resulted in removal of the catheters, but it was not significantly different between the two catheters. The prevention of complications should be an important goal in the daily care of infants in the NICU.
