Experiences of preconception, pregnancy, and new motherhood for lesbian nonbiological mothers.
To describe the experiences of preconception, pregnancy, and new motherhood from the perspective of lesbian nonbiological mothers. ⋯ The experience of preconception, pregnancy, and new motherhood for nonbiological lesbian mothers is complicated by the lack of biological and legal substantiation to the infant, few role models, and limited social support. Nurses and health care providers cognizant of these issues can play an important role in facilitating a positive transition to motherhood for this population.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyMaternal satisfaction with administering infant interventions in the neonatal intensive care unit.
To examine mothers' satisfaction with administering interventions for their preterm infants and with the helpfulness of the study nurse by comparing massage with auditory, tactile, visual, and vestibular stimulation (ATVV intervention), kangaroo care, and education about equipment needed at home and to explore whether mother and infant characteristics affected maternal satisfaction ratings. ⋯ Mothers were satisfied with interventions for their infants regardless of the intervention performed. Maternal satisfaction with the intervention was related to recruitment site, maternal demographic characteristics, and maternal psychological distress, especially at 2 months. Thus, nursing interventions that provide mothers with a role to play in the infant's care during hospitalization are particularly likely to be appreciated by mothers.

ReviewThe importance of interdepartmental collaboration and safe triage for pregnant women in the emergency department.
Pregnant women who present to the emergency department can present challenges that range from the diagnoses of unsuspected pregnancies to the determination of where evaluations should occur. In this review we identify literature associated with the triage of pregnant women in the emergency department and propose a model for triage and evaluation of pregnant women in the emergency department. Strategies are described to facilitate interdepartmental communication to optimize safe maternal/fetal care.

ReviewAn integrative review of skin breakdown in the preterm infant associated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure.
To identify factors associated with skin injury during nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) and describe differences in frequency, severity, and type of skin injuries when comparing nasal interfaces used during NCPAP in the preterm infant. ⋯ Risk factors during NCPAP include nasal injury and trauma secondary to tight-fitting nasal interfaces necessary to provide continuous distending pressure for respiratory stability. Identifying strategies to reduce skin breakdown will support noninvasive treatment success, reduce reintubation rates, reduce sepsis, reduce patient discomfort, and improve developmental outcomes during NCPAP use.
